Nursery at Village Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Stories, conversation and space to explore give Village Primary School’s nursery its character. Village Twos provides for eligible two-year-olds, alongside Nursery for children aged three and four. Both belong to the school’s early years provision in Thornaby.

The emphasis is on becoming independent and taking an active part in learning. Nursery has a spacious indoor environment and an outdoor learning area, giving children room to investigate beyond a table-based activity. The school aims to build confidence through experiences matched to children’s interests and stage of development.

The Nursery Day

Language runs through the day. Adults demonstrate listening and conversation and encourage children to explain their thinking. The school aims to introduce new vocabulary throughout these exchanges. Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the school aims to connect learning through meaningful experiences rather than keep activities in separate compartments. For a young child, talking about an idea is part of exploring it.

Books offer a concrete example. At the March 2023 inspection, children in the two-year-old provision enjoyed daily stories and shared reading. They played contentedly, listened together on the carpet and imitated adults’ speech. Inspectors found that early years children began learning quickly, with independent activities available indoors and outside.

Talk 4 Writing is used from Nursery, adding a named approach to language learning. Practical exploration also has a place: the EYFS woodwork area has been used for activities intended to develop physical skills, mathematical thinking and persistence. It gives children something tangible to work on while concentrating on a task.

Outside, the school aims to help children experiment with manageable risks and consider safety. Physical development and opportunities to explain ideas sit alongside one another, making the intended day about movement as well as talk.

Care and Support

Parents can follow their child’s online learning journey and add comments to photographs and videos. That provides a practical link between home and Nursery: families can contribute to the record of their child’s experiences rather than simply receive updates.

Staffing includes a Nursery teacher, a Nursery teaching assistant and an assistant working across Nursery and Reception. The Nursery teacher and teaching assistant hold Level 3 emergency paediatric first aid qualifications. Village Twos has teaching assistants and a teacher advisor. The early years team aims to get to know each child’s interests and support their individual learning.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route. Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s School Admissions and Transfers team processes applications, and places are allocated against admissions criteria. Treat choosing Nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.

Familiarity is built through transition activities. Reception teachers spend time with Nursery children, the teams arrange shared activities, and Nursery children visit the Reception classroom. These experiences introduce the adults and surroundings involved in the next step; they do not secure admission.

Practical Information

Morning, afternoon and 2.5-day patterns are offered, with 15-hour and 30-hour places depending on eligibility. Eligible two-year-olds can access provision, while children aged three and four can access the universal 15-hour entitlement; eligible working parents may qualify for 30 hours. Paid attendance is also offered for two-year-olds who do not qualify for funding. Contact the school for current charges.

Applications for Village Twos and Nursery use separate online forms. Enquiries go to the school office on 01642 676768 or enquiries@thevillageprimary.org.uk.

Nursery uniform includes a white polo shirt, grey clothing and black shoes with Velcro fastenings, with blue jumpers among the specified items. Girls may wear a blue summer dress during the Summer term.
