Nursery at Etruscan Primary School

Language, curiosity and practical making give Etruscan’s early years provision its character. The nursery belongs to Etruscan Primary School on Dundee Road in Stoke-on-Trent, where children can join from age three. Its current model is full time, with 30 hours of nursery provision. For families considering this start to school life, that makes the weekly attendance pattern a significant part of the choice.
At the inspection on 24 and 25 September 2024, Ofsted judged early years provision Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Vocabulary has a clear role in early learning here. In September 2024, staff’s attention to words supported children’s speaking and communication. The learning environment also helped children investigate, play and follow their curiosity. These are useful foundations for a child learning to explain an idea or join a conversation.
Practical work gives that exploration another outlet. Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), Expressive Arts and Design includes learning artistic skills and techniques. Children can reach materials themselves to try out ideas. Painting and clay work are examples of activities used to practise handling and control: making something also gives small hands a task to master.
Design and Technology forms part of early years topic work across the year, linking Physical Development with Expressive Arts and Design. The emphasis is on developing fine motor control and experimenting with what materials can do. In parent terms, this means early learning includes using hands, testing ideas and making choices about materials, alongside developing language.
Children in early years settled promptly in September 2024. That is a reassuring finding for families weighing up the first separation from home, although it describes children’s experience at that time rather than promising an identical start for every child.
The school has an Inclusion Lead who is also the special educational needs coordinator (SENCo). Support for additional needs. In September 2024, curriculum adjustments across the school did not consistently meet some pupils’ needs. This was a school-wide concern, rather than a nursery-specific finding; it makes the fit between a child’s needs and their learning activities an important consideration.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Etruscan follows Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s admissions route, with Reception applications made through the council’s admissions website. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
Nursery places currently follow a full-time, 30-hour model, which is reviewed annually. That review condition matters when planning future childcare arrangements: the present pattern should not be treated as a permanent promise.
