At a Glance

Free play and structured learning share the day at Greenways, with The Curiosity Approach shaping how children use resources they can choose for themselves. This is the nursery within Greenways Primary Academy in Stockton Brook, welcoming children from the term after their third birthday. September, January and Easter are the entry points.

The provision follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Its emphasis extends beyond early reading and number work to conversation, movement, relationships and managing personal needs. For families, that means a start to school which includes learning how to express feelings and become more independent.

The Nursery Day

Children move between activities led by adults and play they direct themselves. The Curiosity Approach encourages exploration, with learning resources accessible throughout the session. That gives children opportunities to follow an idea rather than rely on an adult to select every activity.

Seven areas organise the EYFS curriculum. Language, physical skills and emotional and social development form its foundations; literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and creative expression extend them. In everyday terms, children practise listening and speaking, develop coordination and learn to manage emotions alongside exploring books, numbers and materials.

Books and poems introduce literacy, while mathematics includes counting, recognising quantities from their arrangement and exploring how numbers up to 10 are composed. Shapes, measures and patterns also feature. These are concrete starting points for making sense of words and quantities.

Creative work includes role-play, dance, art and making things with different materials. Specialist teachers teach music from Nursery, adding subject expertise to this part of the day. Exploration of technology, the natural world and communities gives children further things to investigate and talk about.

Care and Support

Settling begins before the first full session. Spring Stay and Play activities give children an hour in the nursery classroom alongside their parent or carer. Summer home or pre-school visits help staff learn about each child's interests, followed by another familiarisation session in July.

For September starters, the first two weeks use half-day attendance, with full-time attendance beginning in week three. This staged introduction gives children time to become familiar with the people and surroundings. All nursery staff have paediatric first-aid training.

Support for special educational needs and disabilities sits within the academy's inclusion arrangements. Teachers adapt learning, and the school works with speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and educational psychologists. Parents can discuss concerns with the SENDCo through the academy office; informal coffee mornings also offer opportunities for conversation.

Daily contact gives families another route to raise concerns. Longer discussions can be arranged with the class teacher through the office, allowing a child's needs to receive more time than a brief conversation at collection.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the deadline for their child's entry year. Treat that application as a separate task, even when your child is already settled at Greenways.

Transition activities serve a different purpose. New Reception children have two days in their future classroom to become familiar with classmates and surroundings. Those visits help prepare children for the change; they do not secure admission.

Practical Information

Term-time attendance. Morning sessions run from 9am to noon, while full days run from 9am to 3.10pm. Morning drop-off doors open between 8.45am and 8.55am. Full-time attendance is encouraged, and the term-time calendar means families need separate arrangements for school holidays.

The 15-hour funded pattern covers weekday mornings during term time. Families can pay to extend attendance, while some parents qualify for 30-hour funding and apply termly. Contact the school for current charges.

Early Years uniform combines a green cardigan or sweatshirt, a white polo shirt and grey bottoms. Logo items are optional, and pre-loved uniform can be requested through the office. Nursery enquiries and visits can be arranged by calling 01782 235333; visits can take place during the day or after school.
