Stay and play sessions give new nursery children a first taste of Harpfield before they begin. That is a concrete starting point for families preparing for a new routine. This is the nursery provision within Harpfield Primary Academy in Hartshill, Stoke-on-Trent, where the school's age range starts at three.
The nursery sits within a school that uses iCREATE to organise support for additional needs. For parents whose child needs adaptations, the useful detail is the connection between classroom teaching, the SENDCo and family involvement in planning support.
For children needing help with communication, the school's iCREATE approach includes adapting teaching to individual needs. Support is organised through a graduated response: staff assess a child's needs, plan what to change, put that support into practice and review it. The practical implication is that adjustments can be reconsidered as a child develops, rather than treated as a fixed package.
New starters are offered stay and play sessions. These provide an opportunity to become familiar with the nursery before the change to regular attendance.
Concerns about development begin with the class teacher, who can involve the SENDCo where appropriate. The school also has a Home School Link Leader. Those roles give families distinct routes for discussing learning needs and support between home and school.
Children receiving SEND support at Waves 3 or 4 have a termly cycle of assessment, planning, action and review, with new targets developed alongside parents and children where appropriate. For children in the EYFS with an Education, Health and Care Plan, reviews take place twice a year. This makes family discussion part of the review process.
Physical access is a school-wide consideration. The building has a lift, accessible toilets and a shower and changing facility for disabled pupils. These are tangible features for families considering mobility or personal care needs. Staff receive SEND training covering the areas of need in the SEND Code of Practice.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and obtaining a school place as separate decisions.
Transition days are available to children moving from nursery provision into Reception, helping them become familiar with a different environment. This practical preparation is separate from the allocation of places. For pupils with an Education, Health and Care Plan, information is gathered and passed to their next education provider to support continuity of care and learning.
