Nursery at Jackfield Infant School

Self-portraits, colour mixing and stories gave Jackfield’s 2025–2026 nursery curriculum a practical, creative starting point. Children explored materials and learnt how to use tools, with skills introduced and then revisited through play. The emphasis was on doing things themselves.
The nursery belongs to Jackfield Infant School on Jackfield Street in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. September entry is for children who are three by 31 August. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good following the inspection of 29 and 30 November 2022; this covers early years within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection.
The Early Years Foundation Stage combines learning to communicate, manage feelings and move confidently with early reading, writing, maths, creative work and understanding the world. Exploration and perseverance matter alongside knowledge. For parents, that means learning includes trying out ideas and choosing how to approach a task.
Nursery themes for 2025–2026 included Marvellous Me!, Once Upon a Time and What a Wonderful World. Art activities included drawing faces with detail, experimenting with mixed colours and making pictures linked to the Gruffalo. These give children concrete ways to express ideas before writing becomes their main tool.
Practical work also included snipping paper with scissors, joining materials and trying simple cooking processes such as mixing and decorating. Children returned to tools and materials during continuous provision, the opportunities to practise beyond an introduced activity. A nursery playground adds an outdoor space to this picture.
In November 2022, early years routines were effective and learning extended children’s existing understanding, helping them develop language and early number skills. This gives the creative activity a clear learning purpose.
Settling into school life was supported by staff expectations and established early years routines in November 2022. Across Jackfield, a summer programme of visits and a meeting for parents support September starters. Other agencies involved with a child can join that meeting, helping staff understand their needs before they begin.
For children needing additional support, the school uses Pupil Passports with measurable targets reviewed each term with families. Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher, SEND coordinator or assistant SEND coordinator. Communication includes ClassDojo and text messages, giving families routes to maintain contact beyond meetings.
Communication support. In November 2022, some pupils across the school received help with communication needs too slowly. Families whose child needs this support should discuss the planned provision and how progress will be reviewed. The same inspection identified inconsistent checks on learning and concerns about attendance across the school; these were school-level findings, rather than nursery-specific judgements.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and is not an oversubscription priority. Families must make a separate Reception application through the coordinated process with Stoke-on-Trent City Council, using the online Admissions Portal and meeting the normal application deadline.
Familiarity with Jackfield does not replace the Reception application.
Jackfield’s school timetable runs from 9am to 3pm for all year groups. The school requests named clothing and bags, and second-hand uniform is available through the office. This offers a practical option for families preparing for the school day.
