Stories and rhymes give Kingsfield’s nursery its clearest character: children begin building language through books from the start. This is the nursery provision within Kingsfield First School, on Gunn Street in Biddulph, with morning, afternoon and full school day attendance patterns. For families, the practical choice is how much of that school day their child attends.
Language is a central thread. In September 2023, nursery children encountered storytelling and rhyme to develop their speaking skills; across early years, daily phonics helped children learn sounds. These are complementary activities: listening to stories builds language, while phonics introduces the sounds used in reading.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the framework for learning and care for children aged zero to five. Its learning areas cover creativity, discovering the world, early maths and literacy alongside movement, communication and social development. That means the nursery curriculum concerns more than preparation for reading: physical and personal development belong alongside it.
In September 2023, children in early years were learning classroom routines, attentive listening and appropriate behaviour. Those everyday habits matter for taking part in a group and understanding what happens next in a session.
Preparation begins before the nursery start. Families have nursery readiness activities to share with their child, and the Nursery Team is the contact for discussing additional sessions. This gives parents practical preparation to work through alongside arranging attendance.
For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school has a SENDCo who also leads inclusion. Queries go through the school office. Kingsfield aims to remove obstacles to learning through work with parents and other agencies; families can use that contact route to explain their child’s needs and discuss support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate Reception application through Staffordshire County Council’s normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their child’s intake. Keep that application separate from arranging nursery sessions.
Reception preparation includes photographs and a video for parents to share with their child. These offer a way to talk about the next stage together, but preparation and admission remain separate matters.
The September 2026 nursery offer gives children eligible only for 15 funded hours a choice of five mornings, 8:45am to 11:45am, or five afternoons, 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Additional sessions can extend attendance to 8:45am to 3:15pm. They require advance agreement and a review each half term, so families should plan a regular pattern.
For children eligible for 30 funded hours, the full weekly provision totals 32.5 hours. Full-time attendance carries a charge for the additional 2.5 hours. Alternatively, families can avoid that charge by collecting at 12:45pm after lunch on one Monday, Tuesday or Friday afternoon, or taking their child home daily between 11:45am and 12:15pm.
Extra morning or afternoon sessions for children without the additional 15 hours of funding depend on space and must be regular. Their charge includes lunchtime supervision. Ask the school for current charges. Nursery applications are submitted online using a completed form; enquiries can go to office.kng@cflptrust.co.uk or 01782 973800.
