Children help shape the learning at Milton: their interests guide play, questions and exploration. This is the school's nursery for children aged three to four, with 52 places, on Leek Road in Stoke-on-Trent. Nursery belongs to the Early Years unit, housed separately from the main school building within the school grounds.
Ofsted's April 2026 inspection gave early years a Strong standard judgement. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play carries the learning. Teachers and practitioners join children in investigating, imagining and solving problems, using their interests to plan activities. Children help decide what to explore; adults introduce vocabulary and extend their thinking. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the framework for this practical learning, bringing language, physical skills and learning with others into children's experiences.
Communication receives close attention. In April 2026, early years teaching used stories, songs and rhymes to develop listening and speaking, with phonics reinforced through play. Children also practised cooperating and handling their feelings. These are useful foundations for joining a group, explaining an idea and taking part in learning.
Small physical skills receive specific help too. Staff adjusted teaching to develop children's use of scissors and their pencil grip where needed. Outdoor activity has space beyond the classroom: the school grounds include a field and a small woodland area. A nursery visit to Once Upon a Time is among the educational outings, subject to change.
Settling starts with opportunities to play alongside familiar adults. Children joining nursery are invited to summer-term play-and-stay sessions; a phased start may be arranged for children with special educational needs or disabilities. Staff may also contact a previous setting, helping them understand a child's needs before the move.
Parents can send observations from home through 2EvidenceMe, allowing staff to respond to experiences beyond nursery. Early years workshops and learn-with-me sessions continue the partnership during the year, giving families opportunities to participate in learning.
For additional support, the class teacher works with the special educational needs coordinator. Pupil Passports record individual needs, and parents are invited to termly provision reviews. In April 2026, early years staff adapted teaching closely to individual children, including those with SEND, helping them develop skills across the curriculum.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority's normal application process and meet the deadline for their child's entry year.
For the September 2026 admission cycle, nursery attendance conferred no Reception priority. Familiarity with school staff and other children can help with the practical transition, but it does not change the admissions decision. Treat the nursery choice and the later school application as separate decisions.
Term-time attendance has two patterns: a full day from 9am to 3.20pm, or a morning from 9am to noon. Full-time places are encouraged. The 15 funded hours cover mornings, Monday to Friday; some families qualify for 30 funded hours. Families who do not qualify for that extended funding can pay for an additional 15 hours. Contact the school for current charges. A contribution towards consumable resources is also requested.
Uniform includes a white polo shirt, navy sweatshirt or cardigan, grey bottoms and formal black shoes. Bring a named coat, water bottle and spare uniform. Drop-off uses the front Early Years playground and nursery classroom door; collection requires a responsible adult aged 18 or over.
