Nursery at Summerbank Primary Academy

Stories, conversation and exploration give Summerbank’s nursery its character. Children start from age three within the school’s Foundation Stage, with a current nursery intake of 52 and one September entry. A nursery class teacher works alongside support staff, placing the provision within the school’s early years team.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 7 and 8 November 2023. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Summerbank Foundations gives the learning a clear structure. Its Foundation One stage covers nursery, with learning planned across the seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). For parents, this means staff plan how children’s knowledge and skills develop across early learning, rather than treating activities as isolated tasks. Books supply themes and opportunities to extend vocabulary and experience.
Planning works in half-term steps. Staff review learning at the end of each half term and carry forward anything that needs more attention. Children therefore have further opportunities to practise before the teaching moves on. The school aims to encourage independent exploration indoors and outside, alongside resilience and problem-solving.
A past activity makes that approach tangible: in March 2020, nursery children explored Stick Man by gathering materials and making their own stick characters. The story became something to handle and create. In November 2023, early years teaching adapted to children’s developmental stages, while the learning environment changed as their skills grew. This kept the level of challenge responsive to the children.
Settling begins before the first nursery day. Staff visit children at home, meeting them in familiar surroundings and completing admission forms with families. Children initially attend part time, then quickly move to a full-time place. That gives the start a staged shape rather than expecting the full day immediately.
For concerns about a child’s development or learning, the class teacher is the first contact. A SENCo appointment can be arranged through the school office for specialist advice. The wider inclusion team also includes English as an additional language support and a nurture/learning mentor, giving families identifiable routes for different concerns.
A separate application matters. Attending Summerbank’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again and return their application on time through the normal local authority process.
Nursery families receive a Reception application pack through the school when the local authority issues it. The local authority handles Reception applications. Receiving the pack is a practical step in applying, not an allocation of a place: parents still need to complete and submit the application.
The full nursery day runs from 8.45am to 3.10pm. Nursery has its own gate at the front of the building, opening at 8.45am. The start allows parents and carers to pass important messages to staff, making everyday handover part of the routine.
Collection is from the same entrance used in the morning. Tell the office if someone outside the child’s emergency contacts will collect, or if collection is delayed. These arrangements make advance communication important whenever the usual plan changes.
Uniform includes a green Summerbank Academy sweatshirt or cardigan, a white polo shirt and grey or black lower garments. Plain black school shoes are expected. A waterproof coat supports outdoor play; pre-loved uniform is also provided to help families.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 01782 233611 or email office@summerbank.co.uk. To register an interest in a place, take the child’s birth certificate to the office; an application form follows when the local authority issues it.
