Nursery at Sutherland Primary Academy

During the February 2023 inspection, books and vocabulary work gave Sutherland’s early years provision a clear language emphasis. Adults regularly read to children and explored words with them. For parents, those findings point to an emphasis on children understanding and using words.
The nursery belongs to Sutherland Primary Academy on Beaconsfield Drive in Blurton, Stoke-on-Trent. The academy’s entry age begins at three. This is nursery provision within a primary school, with a separate application needed for the move into Reception.
Language has a defined place in the early years curriculum. In February 2023, Ofsted identified an emphasis on communication, with frequent adult reading and opportunities to explore vocabulary. Those are concrete experiences for young children: listening to books and spending time with unfamiliar words. The focus gives parents a useful picture of the learning emphasis.
Planning also extends beyond individual activities. In February 2023, leaders had considered both the content of children’s early years learning and its sequence. That means thinking about what children learn next, as well as what they are doing now.
Curriculum clarity. The same inspection required clearer identification of essential knowledge in some subjects across the school. This was a school-level concern, rather than a finding that every nursery activity was affected. For families, the distinction matters when weighing the early years findings against the wider curriculum improvement needed.
An Inclusion Leader also holds the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator role. Having those responsibilities identified gives families a point of contact for discussions about additional needs, rather than leaving support solely as a general enquiry.
Parent Lite allows parents to check and change the information held about their child. This provides a practical way to keep details accurate. It is a records tool, so its role should be understood separately from conversations about learning and care.
Medicine arrangements have a specific condition: the school can administer prescribed antibiotics during the day when they are required four times daily, provided parents complete the administration form. The form is part of the arrangement, not an optional extra.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception process; choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself.
The application route is through Stoke-on-Trent City Council. Parents can also complete an application form and return it to the school office. Keep the Reception application distinct from the nursery application, even though the school offers application routes for both stages.
Eligibility for 30 hours of nursery funding is checked through a parental declaration returned to the school office. This is conditional funding, so families should treat the eligibility check as part of arranging their child’s place.
