Nursery at The Meadows Primary Academy

Seedlings gives children who turn three during the academic year an earlier start within The Meadows Primary Academy’s nursery. Alongside it, the main nursery offers full-time places of 30 hours a week, with that offer reviewed for individual children. This is a school-based start on Poplar Drive in Blurton, Stoke-on-Trent, with a nursery team within the wider early years staff.
The day has a clear rhythm. Doors open at 8.40am, giving children ten minutes for Early Bird Activities before the 8.50am start. Nursery finishes at 3.00pm. For families organising collection alongside older siblings, that earlier finish matters.
Lunch begins at 11.30am, with the afternoon starting at 12.15pm. Children can have a school meal or bring lunch from home, so the full day includes a shared break for eating between its morning and afternoon parts. Collection is from classroom doors.
Language is a distinctive thread in the learning. In December 2024, Ofsted identified an emphasis on vocabulary beginning in Nursery, alongside a curriculum that specifies learning at each stage, including early years. That gives parents a useful focus: the words children understand and use are part of their learning from the beginning. The same inspection identified a school-wide weakness in checking understanding during lessons, which sometimes left gaps unnoticed or missed opportunities to extend learning; this was not identified specifically as a nursery concern.
School meals are provided by Caterlink, and nursery lunches are charged. Payment is made beforehand through Arbor. Families can choose a packed lunch instead; for current meal charges, contact the school office.
Support also connects nursery families to the wider school. The SEND arrangements include additional teaching in small groups led by teaching assistants, specialist advice for personalised provision, and parent involvement in decisions and target reviews. The practical implication is a role for families in shaping support, rather than simply receiving updates about it.
Cuppa and Cake coffee mornings are open to all parents. They bring families together with the pastoral team, sometimes joined by local services and other professionals offering advice. The school’s external partners include the Speech and Language Service and Stoke-on-Trent SEND services, providing routes to support beyond the classroom.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority in the allocation criteria. Families must make a separate Reception application through Stoke-on-Trent’s online admissions route by the normal deadline.
Places are allocated using priorities covering children in care or previously in care, catchment residence, sibling connections and distance. Nursery attendance is not among them. Familiarity with the school should therefore be treated separately from the application: choosing the nursery does not settle where a child will start Reception.
The main nursery’s full-time offer is 30 hours per week, subject to review for individual children. Normal-round nursery applications go through Stoke-on-Trent’s online admissions route.
For the 2025–26 Seedlings cohorts, hours were linked to funding entitlement: statutory 15-hour places meant half days, most likely afternoons from 12–3pm, while eligibility for 30-hour funding meant a full-time place. Those arrangements belong to that admissions cycle.
Uniform includes a white polo top for nursery children, a purple sweatshirt or cardigan carrying the school logo, grey trousers or a skirt, and sensible black shoes. Schools In Uniform in Meir supplies uniform, and the school also runs second-hand sales.
