At a Glance

Space rockets, playground chalk and Welly Walks gave the 2025–26 programme at Leonard Stanley Early Years (LSEY) its practical character. This is the school's own preschool on Bath Road, welcoming three-year-olds and offering 20 places in each session. The governing board manages the provision. Its single-storey building has ramp access, a useful physical detail for families considering accessibility.

Early years provision was graded Good at the Ofsted inspection on 24 and 25 September 2024. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

The 2025–26 programme connected play with small, concrete steps across the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Children practised conversation and playing with others, explored feelings such as happiness and anger, and worked on everyday tasks including coats and zips. Running and jumping sat alongside early literacy, maths, art and observing animals.

Twinkl Phonics begins in preschool. The 2025–26 programme included listening games and clapping syllables, giving children ways to explore language before fluent reading. Books included Rainbow Fish and Whatever next, while role play moved between a home corner, a café and a space rocket. Stories became material for play.

Maths activities in the 2025–26 programme were similarly tangible. Children compared quantities, used Numicon and programmed Bee Botts by counting squares. In September 2024, early years children practised counting to 10 through steps on treasure maps. These examples connect numbers with objects and movement.

Outdoor activities in the 2025–26 programme included chalk and water painting for large movements, alongside scooters, a climbing frame and balance activities. Welly Walks explored nature and seasonal changes. Creative activities included space models, making pan pipes and using playdough tools. These combined experimenting with materials and practising control of hands and bodies.

Care and Support

The early years team includes a qualified teacher as lead, a senior practitioner with a Level 3 Early Years Foundation Stage qualification and play assistants. Parents receive a preschool update every fortnight, providing a regular connection with what children are doing.

Fruit and vegetables featured in the snack activities of the 2025–26 programme. Registration gathers dietary requirements, allergies, medical information and details of other professionals supporting a child.

For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school aims to gather information from families and services before entry into Early Years. Support follows an assess, plan, do and review cycle, with parents involved in agreeing adjustments and reviewing progress. This gives families a defined process for discussing their child's needs.

Moving On to Reception

Attending LSEY does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no priority for admission. Families must make a separate Reception application through Gloucestershire County Council in the normal admissions round and meet the deadline for their child's entry year. For 2027 entry, priority follows care status, siblings and distance, with separate arrangements for children whose Education, Health and Care Plan names the school.

Preparation for school has its own purpose. The 2025–26 preschool programme included a leavers party. This marked the end of preschool; it did not change admission rights.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 9am to noon, with afternoons from noon to 3pm, Monday to Friday. Full days are also an option. Part-time places use morning or afternoon sessions; full-time places are for families receiving 30-hour childcare funding. Additional sessions can be paid for, subject to availability.

Under the March 2024 arrangements, universal funding provides 15 hours from the term after a child's third birthday, with 30 hours dependent on eligibility. A consumables contribution covers snack, cooking ingredients and resources and is billed each half term. Contact the school for current charges.

Enquiries go to earlyyears@leonardstanley.gloucs.sch.uk or 01453 827681. Registration can be returned by email or in person. Session availability. Requested sessions may lead to an alternative offer or a waiting list, so families need to plan around the sessions offered. Collection arrangements require authorised adults to be over 16 and use a pickup password.
