Nursery at Stonehouse Park Infant School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Long stretches of play and mixed-age rooms shape life at Stonehouse Park Nursery, the nursery provision at Stonehouse Park Infant School. Children aged 2-4 can explore alongside younger and older peers, with support for language, imaginative play and growing independence. The emphasis is on doing things for themselves.

The nursery belongs to Stonehouse Park Federation, whose governors oversee the nursery, infant and junior schools. Its team includes apprentices alongside experienced childcare staff. Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 7 and 8 June 2023; that judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Play gets time to develop here. Sessions include substantial blocks when children can continue their chosen activities without interruption, while activities guided by adults, core experiences and individual support are introduced as the year develops. The curriculum uses the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework and Development Matters guidance, shaped around children's interests and development. In practice, the emphasis is on learning through play while building the knowledge and understanding needed for the next stage.

Language receives deliberate attention through conversations, stories selected by staff, rhymes and songs. Repeated opportunities to hear and use these give children material for their own talk and play. Rooms are arranged so children can choose activities, and resources include ordinary household objects and natural materials alongside manufactured equipment. That creates opportunities to investigate familiar things as well as purpose-made toys.

Outdoor play is part of each day. A large outdoor space borders the infant playground, separated by a fence, so nursery children can watch and interact with older children. In June 2023, children explored water flowing along guttering. It is a concrete example of the hands-on investigation that gives this approach its character.

Care and Support

Settling begins with a family stay-and-play before the child starts. Parents meet staff and their child's key worker, giving them an opportunity to explain routines, interests and needs. Contact continues through a termly call from the key worker and online journals containing pictures, videos and learning updates. Families can also add experiences from home, helping staff connect nursery learning with the child's wider life.

Meetings with the key worker can be requested during the year and are usually 15 minutes long; the nursery SENCo can join when needed. An onsite speech and language therapist supports early intervention, while staff also help children practise dressing and toilet training. These arrangements link developmental support with everyday care.

Snacks include cheese, vegetables, breadsticks and fruit, with milk and water to drink. Parents are asked for a termly contribution covering snacks and nursery resources. Safeguarding responsibilities include two designated leads within the nursery, regular training for staff, accompanied visitors and entrances locked after children come in. Mobile phones are prohibited throughout the nursery.

Moving On to Reception

Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place, and nursery attendance gives no admissions priority. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the normal deadline. Treat that application as a separate decision from booking nursery provision.

Familiarity with school is built separately through regular school visits. The neighbouring playground also lets children observe older pupils during play. These experiences help introduce the school setting; they do not change the admissions position.

Practical Information

Visits can be booked by email, giving families time to see the nursery, meet staff and discuss their child's needs. The nursery telephone number is 01453 823051. Contact the school for current charges.

There is no nursery uniform. Children need comfortable clothes suited to the weather and shoes suitable for running. Choose clothing they can begin to handle themselves, supporting the independence practised during the day, and label every item.
