Play with a purpose shapes Wycliffe College’s Nursery Class: children’s own interests sit alongside activities led by adults, with language, early number skills and emotional development woven into learning. This is provision for ages 3–4 within the school’s Pre-Prep structure in Stonehouse. Children can start once they turn three.
The early-years findings from the ISI inspection of 23 to 25 September 2025 give this approach substance: teaching helped children become confident and increasingly independent learners. For parents, the emphasis is on how children learn to participate, express themselves and try things for themselves.
Learning through play combines adult direction with room for children to pursue their interests. The early years foundation stage (EYFS) here brings together communication, early numeracy and emotional growth. Activities connect with what interests children, giving adults a starting point for extending their thinking rather than treating play as a break from learning.
Conversation does real work. Adults introduce vocabulary and ask questions that encourage children to think more deeply about their activities. Creative play gives children opportunities to explore ideas, while a pretend shop introduces an everyday use for numbers: children use coins to buy items in role play. These are practical beginnings, rooted in something a young child can understand.
Classroom activities and outdoor learning both contribute to physical development, including the smaller movements needed for handling objects and the larger movements involved in active play. In September 2025, the early-years atmosphere was calm and focused, with predictable routines helping children engage. That combination gives the day a recognisable rhythm while leaving space for curiosity.
Settling begins before the first regular day. After accepting a nursery offer, children are invited to stay-and-play sessions in the preceding term. This gives them time to become familiar with the setting before their attendance pattern begins, rather than making the first full day their only introduction.
Relationships and routines carry the care. In September 2025, early-years staff built warm connections with children, maintained suitable staffing ratios and reviewed children’s development regularly. Staff supervision meetings also supported their professional skills.
Circle time gives children opportunities to discuss feelings. Adults help them practise sharing, waiting for a turn and listening to others; tidying after activities introduces responsibility in a form they can act on. These everyday experiences make social learning part of the day.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat Reception admission as a separate step and apply through the school’s admissions process. Wycliffe accepts Reception applications throughout the academic year, with no formal application deadline.
The route starts with an enquiry and includes registration, a school decision and acceptance of an offer. Reception applicants do not take the online CAT assessment. Familiarity with nursery life should therefore be kept separate from the question of securing the next place.
Attendance commitment. The Nursery Class requires a minimum of three full days. Families choose their sessions and confirm them with the nursery teacher before receiving a formal offer, so this commitment matters when fitting nursery around work or other childcare.
Enquiries go to the Prep Admissions team at prepadmissions@wycliffe.co.uk or 01453 820471. Personal tours and open events offer opportunities to meet the team; nursery families can also arrange a mutually convenient meeting with Pre-Prep staff. Contact the school for current charges.
