Kindness learnt through sharing play equipment gives Finborough’s early years provision a concrete character: small social lessons sit alongside individually planned learning. The nursery caters for babies from six months, within an independent school in Great Finborough, near Stowmarket.
At ISI’s November 2023 inspection, the early years provision occupied Little Finborough, a separate pre-prep building sharing the site with the prep and senior departments. Staff knew the children closely, planned their teaching carefully and helped them make good progress. That combination gives individual attention a practical purpose: preparation for the next stage of learning.
Learning follows the seven areas of the early years curriculum, with teaching adjusted to individual children’s needs. For parents, the useful distinction is between simply covering a curriculum and adapting it to the child: planning here takes individual needs into account. In November 2023, children were engaged in their learning and responded readily to their teachers.
Play equipment also serves a social purpose. Children practise sharing and waiting for a turn, taking their cues from adults who demonstrate considerate behaviour. These are everyday foundations for learning alongside other children.
Respect extends beyond play. Early years children learn about public services and why rules help keep people safe. The emphasis connects behaviour with a reason a young child can understand, rather than treating rules solely as instructions to follow.
Familiarity between adults and children is a central strength of the early years findings from November 2023. Teachers understood the children they taught, while their own kindness gave children behaviour to copy. Children treated one another respectfully and behaved well. For a parent considering the nursery, this makes relationships part of the learning experience itself.
Before entry, parents can discuss procedures with the class teacher. Medical preparations can also be discussed with the school, including supplies and staff training. These conversations offer a practical way to prepare for an individual child’s care.
Families must share information about disabilities or special needs before accepting a place, so the school can consider reasonable adjustments. Admission remains subject to the school being confident it can educate and support the child; early discussion therefore matters for both care planning and the placement decision.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask the admissions team to confirm the process for moving from nursery to Reception. Nursery and school registration and acceptance forms are separate.
Finborough’s entry criteria also continue to apply during a pupil’s time at school. The preparation for subsequent learning identified in November 2023 is an educational benefit, not a promise of admission.
