Nursery at Welcombe Hills School

A family member is expected to accompany the child for the first four sessions, with the duration guided by the family’s wishes: that practical involvement gives Welcombe Hills’ specialist nursery its clearest character. Starting here involves the family and an interdisciplinary team, with a home visit after a placement is agreed and an early review to decide the child’s next priorities. Parents have a defined part in the process.
This is the pre-school provision within Welcombe Hills School in Stratford-upon-Avon. Places are for children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), with allocation controlled by the local authority. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Requires improvement following the inspection on 14 and 15 November 2023. That is an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Communication and the order of learning deserve close attention here. In November 2023, early years activities did not consistently help children accumulate knowledge because the curriculum had not defined clearly enough what they should learn first and next. For parents, the useful question is how an activity connects to their child’s next learning step.
Language was another concern. In November 2023, the early years environment did not surround children with enough language and communication opportunities, slowing their development of vocabulary and communication. These findings matter when considering how the nursery day will help a child express needs and understand others.
Settling starts before attendance. Once the placement has been agreed, a home visit brings staff together with the child and family to collect information about individual needs. Family accompaniment then supports the move into nursery. The expectation is attendance alongside the child for the first four sessions, although the duration should reflect each family’s wishes.
Around six weeks after admission, families meet professionals to discuss the opening weeks and agree priorities for the next six months. Notes are circulated afterwards. This gives parents a specific opportunity to shape what happens next, rather than leaving the initial arrangements untouched.
School-wide safeguarding was effective in November 2023, but recruitment checking and recording needed attention: reference records had gaps, and completion of overseas checks had not been assured. This concern sits alongside the early years findings when weighing the provision.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. The local authority controls placements through the EHCP process; the school cannot allocate a place itself. Ask the child’s plan coordinator what arrangements apply when moving to Reception. An information visit for families considering Reception is organised by the Early Years Leader. Treat that visit as preparation, rather than a placement offer.
Where circumstances allow, children approaching an agreed school placement have familiarisation visits. Adults from their previous setting are encouraged to accompany them and pass on information. Photographs of people and activities can also go home to help prepare the child for change. These arrangements support transition; they do not establish admission priority.
Initial placement enquiries go through the child’s plan coordinator. Pre-school placement involves an Early Years placement panel recommendation to SEN Casework. All places are currently allocated, so availability is a material constraint for families considering this provision.
The school day runs from 8:50am to 3:20pm for all children. General enquiries can also go to the school office on 01789 266845 or admin7044@welearn365.com.
