Story times, conversation and learning to take turns give Fledglings its character. This is Thrupp School’s nursery class, with provision for three-year-old children at the school on Thrupp Lane in Stroud. The emphasis is on building language alongside the everyday habits of being part of a group.
In March 2025, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than giving the nursery a separate rating. The nursery-specific findings give parents a useful picture: relationships with adults helped children settle, while conversations and stories supported their developing vocabulary.
Language runs through the nursery day. Adults talk with children to extend the words they can use, and story times help them make sense of what they hear. These are practical foundations for enjoying books: listening to a story and discussing it matter alongside learning how reading works.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) takes concrete form here through communication and social routines. Children practise waiting for a turn and forming a line, learning how to share a group space safely and consider others. Small routines carry real weight.
Fledglings’ autumn activities include exploring colours, fruit and people who help us, alongside Diwali and seasonal making. These give children recognisable subjects to talk about, connecting nursery learning with themselves and the world around them.
Across EYFS, the school uses Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised for phonics, a structured approach to teaching the relationship between sounds and letters. In March 2025, phonics teaching beginning in early years was effective. This sits alongside the nursery’s emphasis on spoken language and stories; it should not be read as a promise that every nursery child follows the same reading timetable.
Settling depends on relationships. In March 2025, nursery children settled successfully with support from adults, giving a reassuring basis for the move into a classroom group. Taking turns also taught consideration for other children, bringing care and learning together in ordinary moments.
For families, the wider school offers an open-door approach, telephone conversations as an alternative to meeting in person, and regular informal contact. Parent and carer mornings include SEND support. A private meeting space allows families to speak with external agencies in school, making sensitive conversations easier to arrange.
Practical family help includes food and clothing bundles, access to pre-loved uniform and support with forms and applications. These are school-level support arrangements, rather than a description of nursery meals or a nursery-specific care plan.
Attending Thrupp’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as separate decisions: becoming familiar with school life does not itself secure admission.
