At a Glance

Digital microscopes and conversation around the meal table give Benedict Biscop’s early years provision a distinctive character: discovery and social learning sit together. The nursery belongs to the Church of England primary academy on Marcross Drive in Moorside, Sunderland. It forms part of the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Ofsted judged early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 8 and 9 October 2024. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Exploration gives the early years curriculum its direction. In October 2024, children used digital microscopes to investigate fingerprints and objects that caught their interest. The equipment makes small details visible, giving children something concrete to examine and discuss. Adults build on those discoveries through questions that encourage children to explain their thinking and become more independent.

Language runs through the learning. Staff help children develop conversations, using discussion to extend their reasoning. The EYFS experience here combines curiosity with learning to communicate, make choices and interact with others. Activities also develop creativity and help children understand their feelings and relationships. These are practical foundations for participating in learning alongside other children.

The session pattern gives families a clear distinction between morning attendance and longer days. Children taking the 15-hour entitlement attend mornings across Monday to Friday. The 30-hour pattern continues through the afternoons on Monday to Thursday, then ends at lunchtime on Friday.

Care and Support

Family groups give adults a way to follow individual children’s development closely. In October 2024, this arrangement supported attention to each child’s progress, alongside an emphasis on emotional development and getting along with others. Children played cooperatively together.

Mealtimes have a learning purpose too. Eating in a family-style arrangement creates opportunities for conversation and practising social interaction. Care and learning meet at the table.

For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), adults adjusted the early years curriculum to individual learning needs. This enabled children to participate in the learning opportunities alongside their peers. Inclusion involved changes to what children experienced, with support shaped around the child.

Moving On to Reception

A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place at Benedict Biscop. Every family must make a separate Reception application through the local authority route. Applications are ranked against the school’s admission criteria, so families should treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as separate steps.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am, Monday to Friday. The afternoon session for 30-hour provision runs from 11:45am to 3:30pm on Monday to Thursday. Friday’s 11:45am finish matters for families arranging childcare around a working week.

Educare provides paid additional nursery hours beyond either entitlement. This can extend a morning place into afternoon provision or add Friday afternoon beyond the 30-hour pattern. Contact the school for current charges.

For nursery enquiries, telephone 0191 594 7033 or email bbinfo@nllt.co.uk. The school is at Marcross Drive, Moorside, Sunderland, SR3 2RE.
