Early reading and clear routines give Diamond Hall Infant Academy’s nursery its shape. This is nursery provision within the infant academy on Well Street in Sunderland, with provision for two-year-olds and nursery groups labelled Nursery 2's and Nursery 3's. For families, the distinction is useful: the nursery is part of the school, while choosing a nursery place remains a separate decision from securing Reception admission.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 11 and 12 March 2025. That judgement covers early years within the academy; it is not a separate nursery rating. The school aims to build children’s confidence and appetite for learning, giving its youngest children a place within that wider educational ambition.
Morning and afternoon sessions provide the basic shape of the day. Nursery AM runs from 8:35am to 11:35am; Nursery PM runs from 12:20pm to 3:20pm. Those distinct windows matter when matching nursery attendance to work and family routines.
Learning sounds starts in early years. In March 2025, phonics teaching was consistent, with staff trained to teach it. This gives early reading a deliberate place in children’s learning rather than leaving it until later schooling.
There was also a qualification to that picture: in March 2025, some pupils across the school were occasionally given too few opportunities to practise sounds, slowing their progress towards fluent reading. The school was asked to ensure every pupil received the support and sound practice needed. This was a finding about the wider programme, not a finding that every nursery child was affected.
Predictable routines and relationships support behaviour from the early years onwards. In March 2025, these helped children behave well, making expectations part of daily nursery life. For a young child, knowing how the session works matters alongside what they learn.
Operation Encompass connects the academy with police information about children affected by domestic abuse. Confidential alerts reach designated safeguarding leads so that support can be tailored before the following school day. This is a concrete school-level support arrangement with relevance to children’s care, rather than a general statement of intent.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat nursery attendance and the later school application as two decisions: joining the nursery does not settle where a child will start Reception.
Session timing. The morning finishes at 11:35am, while the afternoon finishes at 3:20pm. These are the nursery collection times to factor into family arrangements.
