Nursery at Farringdon Academy

Songs, rhymes and learning to manage feelings characterised Farringdon Academy’s nursery in March 2022. This is the academy’s own provision for children aged three and four, on Archer Road in Sunderland. The emphasis starts with language and everyday routines.
Ofsted judged the early years provision Good at the inspection on 1 and 2 March 2022. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Three attendance patterns shape the day: a morning session, an afternoon session and a longer day for children with a qualifying 30-hour code. The shorter sessions each last three hours; the code-based day lasts six. That difference matters when matching nursery attendance to family routines.
In March 2022, nursery children learned language through songs and rhymes. In March 2022, nursery children were also learning routines and ways to handle their feelings and behaviour. These are useful foundations for joining in with other children as well as communicating with adults. Children settled promptly and behaved well at that time.
The nursery curriculum sits within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Its planning includes nursery learning progression and a maths rhyme and book list, connecting the nursery’s language emphasis with its curriculum planning.
For a child who needs additional help, the class teacher is the first person for parents to approach. The SEND coordinator oversees support and links with specialists such as Speech and Language Therapy and Educational Psychology. Support plans are discussed and reviewed with parents at least once each term, giving families a regular role in deciding what happens next.
Behaviour Intervention Team support explicitly includes Nursery. Teaching can be adjusted to a child’s needs, with individual or group resources and strategies. A home-school contact book may also be used when parents and staff agree it would help communication.
Physical access matters too. The school building has a single level, with an accessible toilet, a shower area and changing facilities. These are practical features for families considering personal care and mobility needs.
Any concern about a child’s welfare can be raised with a member of staff, who will direct it to a safeguarding lead.
Separate application. Attending the nursery does not guarantee admission to Farringdon Academy’s Reception class. Families must apply again through the normal Reception process by its normal deadline. Sunderland Local Authority administers that process for the academy, with applications made through www.sunderland.gov.uk/admissionsonline. Nursery attendance should therefore be chosen for the nursery experience itself.
For children with SEND moving between classes, information and support plans are passed to the next teacher. A planning meeting usually takes place, and a transition passport can be prepared if it would help the child understand the change. This supports continuity of care; it is separate from allocating a Reception place.
Morning nursery runs from 8:30am to 11:30am, while afternoon attendance is from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Each pattern provides 15 hours a week. Children with a 30-hour code attend from 8:30am to 2:30pm, giving 30 hours across the week. The 30-hour offer is for three- and four-year-olds whose parents qualify and obtain the government code.
Registration of interest can begin when a child is two. Parents complete an application through the academy reception and bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate. For nursery enquiries, telephone 0191 522 7673. The nursery has its own entrance, providing a specific point for families to identify when planning the daily journey.
Children can join from age three. The 30-hour childcare offer covers children aged three and four whose parents qualify and obtain a government code.
