Play and outdoor discovery give Hill View’s nursery its character. This is the school’s own nursery on Helvellyn Road in Sunderland, with a nursery teacher and nursery nurses forming its team. The school describes play as the basis of learning from nursery onwards, so the youngest children begin within an approach that extends across the infant school.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 28 and 29 June 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Everyday objects become learning material here. In June 2022, nursery children used the innovation sheds to explore objects’ purposes and discover how they worked. That gives curiosity a concrete focus: understanding familiar things through exploration.
Outdoor classrooms and the nature school were also part of the learning environment in June 2022, with children choosing activities independently. These spaces take learning beyond the classroom and give children some control over what they explore. Hill View describes outdoor learning in all weathers as part of its approach.
The Early Years Foundation Stage approach here puts play alongside children’s developing social skills. In June 2022, nursery staff established routines promptly and expected much of the children, while helping them learn to relate to others. For parents, the combination matters: independent exploration sits alongside learning how to take part in a group.
Relationships provided a strong foundation in June 2022, when connections between nursery children, their families and staff were excellent. The nursery teacher and nursery nurses provide the immediate team around children; the school also has a pastoral lead and family liaison officer.
Parents can contact the family liaison officer through the school office for advice about concerns at home or school and help connecting with outside agencies. This gives families a route for discussing difficulties beyond their child’s learning activities. The SEND coordinator is also contactable through the office.
Support planning. In June 2022, some pupils’ SEND plans across the school needed clearer learning steps and better curriculum adaptations. This was a school-level concern, rather than a finding confined to nursery. For families considering additional support, individual learning goals deserve close attention.
The school cook can help with dietary needs. Discussing those needs with the school gives families a practical starting point for meal arrangements.
Nursery attendance counts as a criterion for Reception entry at Hill View. It does not guarantee a place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Sunderland’s local authority admissions team, keeping the nursery decision and the later school application distinct.
The practical implication is straightforward: choosing this nursery can count in the admissions criteria, but it does not replace the normal Reception application process.
Eligible families can access 30 hours of free nursery provision. Chargeable extras apply, so contact the school for current charges before committing to arrangements.
Nursery registration uses an application form, and the school office handles enquiries on 0191 5947962. The nursery is part of Hill View Infant Academy at Helvellyn Road, Sunderland, SR2 9JJ.
