Buckets of water, brick building and mathematical talk gave Hudson Road’s nursery a practical character at the May 2023 inspection. Children practised reasoning through things they could carry, count and construct. This is the school’s own nursery in Sunderland, with entry from the first full term following a child’s third birthday and starts in September or January.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 23 and 24 May 2023; that judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Children in early years settled into routines quickly and flourished at that time.
Talk is central to learning here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach brings together movement, communication and emotional development, then builds on these through number, literacy, creativity and exploring the world. Planning follows children’s questions and interests, which help shape themed projects. Development Matters is a named starting point, with learning through play alongside planned activities.
Early mathematics, phonics and reading are taught in Nursery. The practical detail matters: in May 2023, nursery children used mathematical vocabulary while moving water in buckets for a brick wall. Resources included shapes pierced with holes, helping children recognise numbers and connect counting with adding or taking away one. Number work had something tangible to attach to.
Nursery children have a dedicated space for outdoor learning alongside Reception. This gives the youngest children an outdoor environment of their own within the wider school site. Creative work also brings families into the nursery: the Easter Stay & Play reported on 30 March 2026 included bonnet decoration and Easter crafts with parents.
Starting arrangements respond to individual children. After a nursery place is confirmed, staff arrange meetings and visits, creating opportunities to discuss a child’s needs before they begin. In May 2023, early years children could regulate their emotions and sustain attention during activities, an important part of managing a session with other children.
SEND planning. A school-wide improvement point from May 2023 concerned insufficiently specific learning targets in some support plans. Those plans did not accurately capture the help being provided, making progress harder to assess and support less clear to parents. For families whose child needs a plan, precise next steps are an important consideration.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Sunderland City Council’s school admissions process, meeting the normal Reception deadline. Treat that application as a separate task even when your child already attends Hudson Road.
Once a Reception place has been offered and the family has confirmed it with the school, parent meetings and visits take place in the summer term. These help families prepare for the next stage; they are separate from securing the place.
The nursery offers a 15-hour pattern through five mornings, afternoons, or attendance across two and a half days. Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.30am; afternoons run from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. There are also 30-hour places for eligible parents. The choice of pattern matters for fitting nursery around family routines.
Prospective families can arrange a nursery visit through the school office. Enquiries go to 0191 514 3434 or hudson.road.primary@schools.sunderland.gov.uk. A nursery waiting-list application can be submitted to the office at any age.
