Three session patterns give families a clear starting point: mornings, afternoons or a day that includes lunch. St Joseph's nursery class takes children aged 3 to 4 within the Catholic primary school on Rutland Street, Sunderland. This is school-based early education with a choice of session length.
Catholic faith shapes the wider setting. The school aims to help children develop knowledge and skills alongside an understanding of Christ's teachings. Nursery families have also taken part in the Lenten Prayer Bag journey, bringing prayer into home life. For parents choosing this nursery, that religious character is part of the experience.
Imaginative play is part of the school's approach to early learning. The school emphasises children's freedom to invent and explore through play, giving families a picture of learning that includes creativity rather than only adult-directed tasks. Nursery sits within the EYFS, the early years foundation stage, with play and exploration part of its approach. The school aims for children to communicate effectively, develop number skills, understand the world around them and express themselves creatively.
Children's rights have a concrete classroom presence through Daisy, the school mascot created and selected by pupils. Daisy appears in each classroom as a reminder of children's rights. That gives families a named starting point for conversations about respect and how children treat one another.
Faith also connects nursery learning with family life. During Lent in 2026, nursery children joined the Lenten Prayer Bag activity at home. It is a specific example of participation extending beyond the classroom, with families involved in the school's Catholic life.
Starting nursery is gradual. Children begin with phased attendance once their place is allocated, allowing the introduction to nursery routines to happen in stages. The nursery teaching role also carries responsibility for leading EYFS, linking the class with the school's early years leadership.
Lunch can be a school meal or food brought from home. Chadwick's Kitchen provides the school's meals, using fresh ingredients, and catering staff work with families on medical diets. For an allergy-related medical diet, parents must submit a request form with a medical note dated within the preceding 6 months. Packed lunches must exclude nuts and products containing them.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities, parents can arrange a discussion with the SEND Team through the office. This provides a direct route to talk about an individual child's needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route, coordinated by Sunderland Council. Treat that application as a separate step from nursery enrolment.
For the September 2026 intake, the deadline was 4:30pm on Thursday 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. After a school place is offered, families are contacted about induction days and starting routines; those arrangements follow the offer rather than securing admission.
The 15-hour option runs Monday to Friday, either 8.50am to 11.50am or 12.20pm to 3.20pm. The 30-hour pattern runs on those same weekdays from 8.50am to 3.20pm. Families therefore choose between five mornings, five afternoons and the longer daily pattern.
School lunches carry a daily charge when chosen; a packed lunch is the alternative. Contact the school for current meal charges. Nursery enquiries and visits can be arranged by emailing sjmoffice@stjosephssunderland.school.
EYFS uniform includes a white polo shirt, with purple knitwear and grey trousers or a skirt. Black shoes and indoor plimsolls complete the clothing requirements. Label belongings clearly; families can also ask the office about preloved uniform.
