Old telephones, pretend cooking and family photographs give Boldmere’s nursery learning a familiar starting point: children’s own lives. This is the nursery within Boldmere Infant School and Nursery on Cofield Road in Sutton Coldfield, part of the Federation of Boldmere Schools.
At the Ofsted inspection on 14 and 15 November 2023, early years provision was rated Outstanding. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play has a clear learning purpose. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) organises learning into seven areas rather than separate school subjects. Here, continuous provision means activities and resources children can return to and explore, alongside teaching from adults. In November 2023, vocabulary development was a particular strength in early years: adults prompted children to ask questions and explain their experiences. Activities were adjusted around children’s interests, supporting sustained attention and independence.
The nursery home corner contains keyboards, older digital cameras and telephones, with toy cookers and microwaves for domestic play. Children can imitate familiar tasks while exploring what technology does. Reading corners and spaces for making marks are features of the early years classrooms. Story props support retelling, while different drawing and writing tools give children practice before formal letter writing. Teachers and teaching assistants read a story to their classes daily; the Nursery Book Explorers Challenge also gives families a named reading activity to share.
Mathematics combines adult teaching with opportunities to use ideas in play, indoors and outside. White Rose Hub and NCETM guidance shape the early years approach alongside Development Matters. Numicon gives children objects to handle as they work on number concepts, and Numberblocks provides another way to explore numbers. Practical resources make the learning tangible.
A nursery outdoor classroom extends the learning space. Across the school grounds there are also two playgrounds, woodland and a large field. Nursery examples include observing caterpillars becoming butterflies and using wedding photographs and a baby book to discuss family history. These give children something concrete to investigate and talk about. In early years design activities, construction kits and other materials support practice in joining, assembling and cutting.
Communication with the nursery teaching team has a direct route: nursery-contact@boldmere.bham.sch.uk reaches the class teacher or year group lead. This gives parents a specific contact for conversations about their child.
For additional needs, the federation’s SEND arrangements involve parents and children throughout the process. The Infant SENDCO coordinates provision and works with parents and external professionals. Families can contact that team through enquiry-inf@boldmere.bham.sch.uk.
Boldmere Inclusion Base is a separate provision on the site for primary-aged children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Condition. Its sensory room and three outdoor areas belong to that provision. Admission to the base follows a separate process through Birmingham’s Special Educational Needs Admissions Team (SENAR), so families should distinguish it from a mainstream nursery place.
Attending Boldmere’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery admission and Reception admission are separate: families must apply again through the normal Reception process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and securing a school place as two distinct decisions.
For the September 2026 Reception intake, the school held a parent information session on 4 June 2026 and provided transition information afterwards. That was preparation for that intake, rather than an admissions advantage for nursery children.
The nursery registration form and its accompanying cover folder are linked from the school’s admissions page. A separate Nursery Document is linked from the prospectus page, giving families a nursery-specific starting point.
For nursery admission enquiries, contact the Infant office on 0121 464 2338 or enquiry-inf@boldmere.bham.sch.uk. The nursery teaching email serves a different purpose: contact with the class team.
The Outstanding judgement from 14 and 15 November 2023 covers the school’s early years provision. It is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.
There is a nursery outdoor classroom. The wider school grounds include two playgrounds, a field and woodland.
