At a Glance

Wednesday mornings mean Forest School for nursery children attending that session: muddy clothes, waterproofs and wellies are part of the plan. This is a teacher-led nursery with a Catholic identity and a place within St Anne's Early Years Unit, created in August 2019. Children start in September after their third birthday.

Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 7 and 8 January 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

The day begins with staggered arrival between 8:30am and 8:50am. Morning children leave at 11:45am, while the day's final collection is at 3:10pm. In January 2025, children in early years became familiar with routines quickly and followed them. For a young child, knowing what comes next is an important part of adjusting to school life.

Physical development brings the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) into practical focus: children practise movement, coordination and working alongside others through play. GetSet4PE provides a sequence beginning in Nursery. Early years children have at least one structured PE lesson each term-time week, practising jumping, running and skipping, sharing equipment and responding to instructions. Bikes, balls, benches and blocks support activity indoors and outside.

Outdoor learning has identifiable spaces. Early years has its own outdoor classroom area, and children also use Woodlands Outdoor School. Nursery Forest School takes place on Wednesday mornings. Families whose children attend that session need clothes suitable for getting wet and dirty, with waterproof clothing and wellies brought in a labelled bag.

Faith also has concrete classroom features. Each class has a prayer table that changes with the church seasons. Nursery religious education uses the Diocesan Strategy for the Teaching of RE, with prayers and activities accessible to families for use at home. The foundation stage's Christmas nativity includes dancing and singing, giving children a shared performance experience.

Care and Support

Teaching responsibilities are split between a teacher covering Monday and Tuesday and another covering Wednesday to Friday, with teaching assistants also assigned across those parts of the week. Home School Links Books are checked each morning. They give families a regular route for passing information to the team; email and a direct contact form provide alternatives.

For concerns about additional needs, the first contact is the child's class teacher, who can arrange a SENCO meeting where needed. The school's inclusion arrangements involve parents and outside agencies in supporting entry to St Anne's. This gives families a clear starting point for discussing their child's needs.

The school meal service uses Arbor for advance orders, with a deadline of 10pm the previous day. Caterlink's choices include a vegetarian option, sandwiches and jacket potatoes. These are school-wide meal arrangements.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. The school directs applicants to Walsall's online route and requires a Supplementary Information Form returned directly to school. Baptised Catholic applicants must also attach their baptismal certificate for the appropriate priority to be applied.

For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is past; it should not be used as a future application deadline.

Practical Information

Nursery enquiries begin with the school office on 0121 353 5114. Registering details leads to an application pack in the spring term before the eligible academic year, with instructions for applying.

On Forest School Wednesdays, attending children wear non-uniform clothing. Clearly labelled clothes and a seasonal hat are part of the preparation. The school's uniform support includes used items and a hardship fund for parents experiencing financial difficulty buying uniform, accessed through the office.
