Familiar logos, the first sounds in children’s names and traditional tales give Manor’s nursery a clear emphasis on language. This is the school’s own provision for three-year-old children, on Keary Road in Swanscombe. Morning and afternoon sessions provide two distinct parts of the nursery day.
In the April and May 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that nursery children settled readily, responded to expectations and developed their language. That finding gives parents a specific picture of the youngest children’s experience, separate from the school’s overall outcome.
Early reading begins with things children recognise. They look at logos, connect pictures with meaning and notice the opening sounds of their own names. Read Write Inc introduces individual speech sounds through the activities and resources children can use during play. The emphasis is on making connections between spoken language, pictures and print.
Stories have a planned place in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) experience. Nursery children encounter at least two traditional tales each term, with books selected across the year. They anticipate rhymes and join in repeated passages, giving them ways to participate before they can read independently.
A reading corner holds further books for adults to share with children. There is also a weekly book to take home for family reading, extending story time beyond the session. These details make books part of both the nursery environment and home life, rather than reserving them for formal instruction.
For additional needs, Manor uses a school-wide cycle of assessing difficulties, agreeing support, putting it into practice and checking its impact. Parents contribute to the plan. The class teacher works with the special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO), so concerns have a clear route beyond the classroom.
Possible adaptations include visual timetables, ear defenders and Now and Next boards. These offer different ways to understand routines or manage sensory demands; support is chosen for the individual child. Teaching assistants have undertaken training in early years communication, emotional regulation and sensory regulation. This is school-wide staffing information, rather than a nursery staffing ratio.
Individual support plans are discussed with families three times a year. Parents can also raise concerns between meetings, keeping the conversation responsive to changes in their child’s needs.
Attending Manor’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as separate decisions.
Transition preparation has its own purpose. Stay and Play sessions begin with parents accompanying their children, followed by a session for children alone. For children receiving SEND support in nursery, the Foundation Stage leader and SENCO gather information from nursery staff and meet parents. Personalised plans and specialist advice help staff prepare support before the move.
Gates open at 8:30am for the morning nursery session and 12:15pm for the afternoon session. The sessions end at 11:30am and 3:15pm respectively. Collection is from the classroom door. Families with siblings collect their youngest child first, which gives the school run a clear sequence.
Parking. Parents cannot park on the school site. Allow for the walk from your parking place when planning collection.
