Storytelling, shared play and learning outdoors shape the nursery experience at Abbey Meads Community Primary School in Swindon. This is the school's own early years provision on Hugo Drive. Conker Nursery Class and Acorn Preschool Class offered 15-hour and 30-hour weekly patterns for the January 2026 admissions cycle.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 16 and 17 May 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play is the starting point. Children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with learning organised around themes. In parent terms, the curriculum brings together talking and listening, managing feelings, building relationships and developing movement skills, alongside early literacy and mathematics. Development Matters supports nursery planning and assessment.
The daily routine combines activities children choose with work directed by adults. There is time to work alone and alongside other children, with learning taking place indoors and outdoors. This gives children different ways to explore an interest: independently, with a friend or with an adult helping them take it further. Staff build on children's interests, asking questions to extend their learning.
Stories have an active role. In May 2023, nursery children enjoyed hearing stories and performing them through play. That makes storytelling something children participate in, rather than simply listen to. Across early years, children also learned quickly to cooperate in play and share, giving everyday activities a social purpose as well as a learning one.
Relationships with children and parents are a stated priority for the early years team. The nursery aims for children to feel secure, heard and valued as individuals. Its combination of independent activity and shared play gives children opportunities to practise being part of a group while making choices of their own.
Milk is free for children under five through the Nursery Milk Scheme. For children attending the 30-hour provision, staying through lunch involves a charge for supervision. Families planning a full day should include that additional arrangement in their childcare decision and contact the school for current charges.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not confer priority. Reception allocation gives precedence to looked-after and previously looked-after children, then siblings, followed by children within the catchment and those outside it. Nursery attendance is not one of those criteria.
A separate application must be made through Swindon Borough Council. For September 2026 entry, the deadline for an on-time application was 15 January 2026. That cycle has passed; families should use the council's normal application route and deadline for their child's entry year. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions.
Morning sessions run from 8:30am to 11:30am; afternoon sessions run from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Children on the 30-hour provision can remain for the whole day when lunchtime supervision is paid for. The lunch interval therefore matters when comparing a single session with the longer pattern.
The January 2026 admissions cycle required a 30-hour code before a child started. Nursery applications use the school's application form, and an offered place must be accepted within two weeks. For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 01793 723239 or email admin@abbeymeads.bluekitetrust.org.
