At a Glance

Mud, minibeasts and ambitious vocabulary give Hedgehogs Nursery its character. This is Bridlewood Primary School’s nursery provision on Chartwell Road in Swindon, with provision for 3-year-olds and a nursery building used for after-school care too. Language development has a clear purpose here: helping children speak more clearly and extend the words they can use.

Ofsted’s report dated 18 November 2025 judged early years to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Communication is a central part of the early years curriculum. For 3-year-olds, carefully repeated practice with difficult sounds helps develop clear speech. Adults extend vocabulary through conversation, introducing ambitious words such as majestic. The emphasis gives children more ways to explain their ideas and join in with learning.

The early years foundation stage curriculum sets learning out in steps, so children build their knowledge as they progress. Reading is part of that learning, and Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is the school’s early years phonics programme. The report dated 18 November 2025 described children using their sound knowledge to read other children’s names: an example of early reading connected to familiar people.

Outdoor activity adds another dimension. During 2025-26, nursery activities included gardening, exploring mud and woodland play, alongside minibeasts and a police visit. Story Dough, traditional tales and gymnastics also featured. These examples give a useful picture of learning that combines stories, movement and encounters with the world beyond the classroom.

A garden and woodland activities featured in 2024-25 too, alongside use of the trim trail. Outdoor exploration is a recurring part of the nursery experience.

Care and Support

A nursery lead and nursery assistant form part of the staffing structure. The report dated 18 November 2025 described positive relationships between early years staff and families, with information shared as children changed stages. Children settled readily into school routines, listened attentively and played cooperatively. Those everyday habits matter as much as learning new words.

Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities were supported effectively to access the same curriculum as their peers. Bridlewood’s nursery uses Provision Map for My Support Plans, covering children with monitoring targets or on the SEND register. Parents with an activated account can read plans and reviews and add comments, giving them a practical role in reviewing support.

Breakfast care includes food as well as social activities. Children under five can receive free milk after parents register them.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions route.

For entry in September 2026, that route was Swindon Local Authority’s coordinated admissions process, with a deadline of 15 January 2026. That application cycle has passed.

Transition support is a separate matter. The report dated 18 November 2025 described early years staff passing relevant information on when children changed stages, helping them adjust to school routines. This supports continuity of care and learning; it does not secure an admissions outcome.
