Penzance, St Ives and St Erth give this nursery a railway identity before children reach the older school years. The provision belongs to Even Swindon Primary School and caters for children aged two, three and four. Families can choose shorter sessions or an all-day pattern, making the length of the nursery day a practical part of the decision.
Play provides the main route into the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the curriculum for this stage of childhood. Here, exploration includes making things, investigating the world and beginning to understand technology. Children select materials and put them together, considering what they might be used for. Science begins through observation, questions and trying out ideas, so learning has a practical starting point.
Art runs through early-years activities rather than sitting entirely in a separate lesson. Kapow supports teaching, with work involving materials, construction and making marks. Nursery phonics uses Development Matters and whole-class lessons organised into four parts. That gives early reading a planned place alongside exploratory play.
Books have a physical home: each classroom has a book corner with texts suited to the children’s age, while the school library welcomes pupils and their families. Early-years technology activities include floor robots and devices within indoor and outdoor provision. These give children objects to explore as they begin learning about technology.
Outdoor play continues across the year when weather permits. Water play also features in the clothing guidance, and a whole-class PE session takes place in the hall once a week. Children keep their ordinary clothes on for PE, so comfortable clothing supports movement as well as play.
For three- and four-year-olds staying all day, lunch is a healthy packed meal brought from home. Their day includes a 35-minute lunch break. Families therefore need to include lunch preparation in their routine.
SEND support follows the school’s Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle: adults consider a child’s needs, agree support, put it into practice and revisit it. Parents contribute information and discuss provision at regular meetings. This gives families a continuing role in decisions about support. The school seeks parental permission before referring a child to another professional.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the local authority’s coordinated admissions process. For September 2027 entry, the application deadline is 15 January 2027.
There is a specific priority condition for the 2027/28 intake: children who have attended the school nursery for at least three terms before Reception qualify under the nursery-attendance oversubscription criterion. This is priority within the allocation process, not an assured place.
Transition support is separate from admissions. For children needing extra help with a change of class or setting, enhanced arrangements can include additional visits, a booklet with photographs and opportunities to meet their new teacher. These arrangements help make the next setting more familiar.
Two-year-olds can attend weekday mornings from 8:35am to 11:35am or all day from 8:35am to 3:10pm, during term time. For three- and four-year-olds, mornings run from 8:35am to 11:35am, afternoons from 12:10pm to 3:10pm, and all-day attendance from 8:35am to 3:10pm. Sessions have fixed boundaries; part-sessions are not offered.
Funding for eligible two-year-olds can cover 15 or 30 hours. Three- and four-year-olds have a 15-hour entitlement over 38 weeks, with 30 hours for some working families. A full week of all-day attendance totals 32 hours and 55 minutes when there are no training days, holidays or bank holidays; time beyond the 30 funded hours is chargeable. Additional paid sessions depend on availability. Ask the school for current charges.
Own clothes are permitted, and royal blue nursery sweatshirts with an embroidered train logo can be bought through Price & Buckland. Choose clothes children can manage during toileting and label each item.
