Play, exploration and growing independence shape nursery life at Lift East Wichel, with morning, afternoon and full-day options for families. Children can join from two years old. This is the school's own nursery in East Wichel, Swindon, with its admissions managed by the school.
The nursery aims to help children become confident and independent. Comfortable clothes, manageable shoes and a mixture of guided activities and independent learning give that ambition a practical expression: children have opportunities to try things for themselves.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In parent terms, this brings together learning to communicate, managing feelings and relationships, and developing physical skills. Play and exploration are the means of learning, with adults leading some activities and children pursuing others at their own pace.
Early literacy sits alongside work with numbers, patterns and shapes. Art, imaginative play and music provide opportunities for creativity, while exploring technology, cultures and the environment helps children make sense of the world around them. The day therefore reaches beyond preparation for reading and writing.
Forest School adds an outdoor dimension. Its setting includes a designated part of the school field and a nature area with a small pond beside the vegetable garden. A wooden fence and locked gate surround the pond. Activities can involve natural materials, nature games and building dens; participation in individual activities is a choice. Nursery children who need the toilet during a session can return to the building with an adult, keeping this care routine supported outdoors too.
Settling starts with cooperation between the nursery team and parents. Staff work with families to help children become comfortable in their new surroundings, and ongoing communication supports understanding of each child's needs and progress. Parents' knowledge of their child has a place in that relationship.
A healthy snack is provided during sessions. For children attending full time, lunch can be brought from home or ordered as a school meal using ParentPay. This gives families a choice over the midday meal. Keep spare clothing on your child's peg so a change is ready when needed.
Entrances and gates remain secure during the day, and children have supervision while learning and playing. Staff have safeguarding training, with two staff members present at dismissal. For additional needs, the school's SEND coordinator can be contacted through the office. The school covers communication, learning, emotional and social needs, alongside sensory and physical needs.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Swindon Borough Council's online Citizen Portal.
For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was midnight on 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. Treat choosing nursery sessions and applying for Reception as separate decisions: joining the nursery does not replace the later school-place application.
Morning nursery runs from 8:30am to 11:30am; afternoon nursery runs from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Lunch care occupies 11:30am to 12:30pm, and full-day sessions are also offered. On the final day of Terms 2, 4 and 6, the morning ends at 11am, lunch care runs until noon and the afternoon finishes at 2pm. Collection plans need to accommodate those shorter days.
The nursery accepts 15-hour and 30-hour government funding, with additional sessions available for payment. Contact the office about availability and current charges at admin@lifteastwichel.org or 01793 695134. Uniform is encouraged, with simple clothing and footwear that children can manage themselves.
The Nest provides nursery after-school sessions from 3:30pm until 4:30pm, 5:30pm or 6pm. The shortest includes a snack; the longer two include a hot meal. Booking requires signed original forms collected from the school reception area.
A School Street restricts traffic outside the school on weekdays between 8:15am and 9am and between 2:45pm and 3:30pm, with exceptions for permit holders and Blue Badge holders. Allow for walking the final part of the journey when driving.
