Nursery at Aberdour Preparatory School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Four nursery rooms, their own outdoor play space and a curriculum called Wonder, Inspire, Discover give Aberdour’s youngest children a distinct setting within the larger school. The nursery belongs to the Pre-Prep department at this independent school in Burgh Heath, Tadworth. Children can start from age two; Bluebell Class caters for rising three-year-olds.

The physical arrangement combines a nursery play area with connections to the wider Pre-Prep. In January 2026, there were four Nursery classes. That is a class count, rather than a measure of available places.

The Nursery Day

Play and purposeful teaching work together here. At the ISI inspection of 20 to 22 January 2026, early years children made good progress through activities they chose themselves and activities directed by adults. Wonder, Inspire, Discover gives this learning its named approach. The early years foundation stage becomes concrete through conversation, counting, physical movement and learning how to treat other people.

The examples have character. Children discussed ice-cream recipes during pretend play, extending their vocabulary. Adding legs to model spiders combined counting with practice in precise hand movements. Adults checked learning as activities unfolded and adjusted tasks accordingly, so the next challenge followed the child’s progress rather than waiting for a later assessment.

Movement also has several forms. Early years children developed coordination through swimming, PE and wake and shake activities, with resources used outdoors as well as inside. The Kitchen Garden and Atelier were used for a Bluebell stay-and-create event in June 2026, giving a concrete glimpse of the spaces associated with this curriculum. Pretend shops introduced money through purchases of items such as ice-cream. Baking cakes for a nearby residential care home brought helping others into a practical activity.

Care and Support

Nursery staffing includes key workers and room leaders, alongside a Nursery Leader who also holds the Early Years SENDCo role. A separate Pre-Prep SENDCo is part of the team. In January 2026, teachers and key workers used their knowledge of children’s interests and abilities to support learning and emotional development. This makes familiarity with the individual child part of everyday care.

Before joining, children have an introductory visit with observation and assessment to help staff prepare for them. Families receive an induction pack as the starting date approaches. These are practical steps towards a familiar start, rather than admission tests: nursery entry is non-selective.

Eating receives direct supervision, with early years staff alert to choking hazards. Staff with paediatric first-aid training are available during the school day. Snacks and lunches are provided across the school, while early years stories, mindfulness and personal and social activities help children practise considerate behaviour.

Safeguarding oversight includes early years. The January 2026 inspection also identified school-wide actions concerning drinking-water labels and confirmation of management prohibition checks carried out externally; both issues were addressed during the visit. Access to inspection reports for parents was also restored during the visit. Maintaining that access remained a recommended action. These are relevant checks on the wider organisation responsible for nursery care.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Confirm Reception admission arrangements directly with the admissions team before planning the next stage. Familiarity with Pre-Prep should not be mistaken for an admissions entitlement.

The nursery’s connection to the wider department describes its everyday setting. It does not, by itself, establish Reception priority.

Practical Information

Blossoming Bluebells born April 2024 to August 2024 can attend a full nursery day and then Fun Club until 5:30pm. That birth-date condition matters when planning collection and childcare.

A non-refundable registration charge applies, and accepting an offered place requires an acceptance form and deposit. Contact the school for current charges. For enquiries or a personal tour, use registrar@aberdourschool.co.uk or telephone 01737 354119. Personal visits can be arranged around a suitable date and time, allowing families to focus their visit on Nursery and Pre-Prep.
