Stories, rhymes and purposeful play shaped learning at Bishops Lydeard Church School’s nursery at the September 2022 inspection. Phonics began in Nursery, while adults supported learning through conversation and exploration indoors and outside. This is the school’s own nursery on Mount Street in Bishops Lydeard, within the Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 27 and 28 September 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.
Play has a clear learning purpose. In September 2022, the early years curriculum built learning in a planned sequence, with adults using conversation and play to extend children’s understanding. For parents, the useful distinction is that play and teaching work together: adults help children develop skills while they explore, rather than leaving learning to chance.
Indoor and outdoor learning spaces both supported this approach. Staff helped children make effective use of the organised environments, giving exploration an adult-supported structure. The physical provision matters because children’s learning takes place beyond a single indoor activity space.
Books are another concrete part of the day. Children shared rhymes and stories regularly, and phonics began in Nursery. Together, these give children an early introduction to books and the sounds used in reading.
Starting well together is the trust’s approach to early years. It places language, children’s interests and learning through play alongside predictable routines. In plain parent language, its emphasis is on children exploring, solving problems and developing relationships, with adults responding to their needs. The trust also expects adults to have time for meaningful conversation during play. That makes interaction a central part of its intended approach.
Routines bring structure to the early years day. In September 2022, staff established them promptly and held high expectations for behaviour from the early years onwards. For young children, that provides a consistent framework for learning how to take part in school life.
The trust’s early years expectations include adults getting to know families and adapting their practice to individual children. Relationships with parents and carers are part of that approach, alongside assessment intended to identify children needing additional help. These are trust expectations, rather than a description of an individual settling programme.
Support also has a wider team structure. Somerset’s trust SEND hub links school leadership and special educational needs coordinators with a local authority SEND partner. This provides an organisational connection between schools and specialist services.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception admissions process and meet its deadline.
For the proposed 2022/23 admissions arrangements, the trust described removing Bishops Lydeard’s criterion for children enrolled in the linked early years setting. That historical proposal should not be treated as a current entitlement. Keep the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
The school is on Mount Street, Bishops Lydeard, TA4 3AN. Nursery enquiries can be directed to the school on 01823 432582 or by email to enquiries@bishopslydeard.bwmat.org.
