Language gives this nursery its clearest character: helping young children build the vocabulary they will need for later learning. Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School’s nursery takes children from age 2 and forms part of the school on South Street in Taunton. This is an early start within a primary school setting.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 19 and 20 September 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Communication is a clear focus. In September 2023, nursery teaching emphasised language development, giving children words to support what they learn next. For parents, this language focus means helping children acquire vocabulary they can use in later learning.
Oracy and Vocabulary is one of the school’s named curriculum foundations. The school aims for children to develop confidence in speaking from their earliest years, alongside consideration for others when communicating. This connects the nursery’s language emphasis with a wider educational aim: children expressing themselves and listening to other people.
At the September 2023 inspection, younger children enjoyed sharing discoveries in the outdoor learning area. The physical space and the language focus work together: discoveries become something to discuss. A past nursery experience also included an Animals To You visit in February 2022, a specific example of an encounter beyond ordinary classroom activity.
The nursery teacher is part of the school’s safeguarding structure, serving as a deputy designated safeguarding lead. Families can raise a concern with the designated lead or a deputy by telephone or email. This gives nursery families a route for bringing worries to the safeguarding team.
Special educational needs support sits within a school team that includes a SEND coordinator and a Special Needs Manager, alongside the Wellbeing Team. Support needs. The September 2023 school inspection identified weaknesses in curriculum adaptation for some pupils with SEND and in checking what pupils had learned. These were school-wide concerns, rather than findings specifically assigned to the nursery, but they matter when families discuss the support their child needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Somerset County Council, with an online application option. The deadline is in the middle of January for entry the following September.
Keep that application separate from arranging nursery attendance. Joining the nursery through school reception does not replace the Reception application, so families need to plan for both processes.
Nursery enquiries and applications go through the main school reception. Visits can also be arranged there, giving families a practical opportunity to see the provision before applying.
