Language, curiosity and learning to solve problems give Priorswood’s early years provision its clearest character. The nursery takes children from age two and forms part of Priorswood Primary School at Wedlands in Taunton. Provision includes two-, three- and four-year-olds, giving families an option before the start of school.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 8 and 9 November 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection outcome.
Adult support for language is the strongest evidenced feature of the early years day. In November 2022, adults helped children develop their speech and took their learning further. For a parent, the useful distinction is the emphasis on developing children’s ideas as well as their vocabulary.
Curiosity also shaped the learning. Children were encouraged to reason and work through problems, so the early years emphasis extended beyond learning words to using them while thinking. These findings give a concrete picture of the teaching approach: adults supported communication alongside children’s developing ability to explore a question and find a solution.
For children who need additional help, the school uses the Somerset Graduated Response Tool and an Assess, Plan, Do, Review process. Staff identify difficulties, choose support, put it into practice and then discuss progress with parents. Teaching can be adapted through changes to tasks or teaching methods, with individual help or small groups where needed. This gives families a process for discussing whether support is working and what should happen next.
Specialist involvement requires parental permission. Possible support includes the Autism Outreach Team, Educational Psychologists, Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy. The SEND coordinator works with families, staff and outside agencies to coordinate provision.
SEND support. In November 2022, the school lacked a sufficiently clear overview of SEND provision, and help was not consistently precise enough. This was a school-wide concern. Families whose child needs additional support should discuss how individual needs and the impact of help will be reviewed.
Safeguarding concerns can be raised with the designated safeguarding lead or a deputy through info@pps.clf.uk. The school discusses concerns with parents before sharing information with other agencies, unless doing so could conflict with the child’s welfare.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority’s Common Application Form, with the normal deadline falling in the middle of January before the September start.
For the September 2026 intake, nursery attendance conferred no priority: allocation depended on care status, sibling and catchment categories, with distance used to separate applications within a category. Choose the nursery for the early years experience, and treat the Reception application as a separate decision.
Nursery enquiries and applications go directly to the nursery on 01823 282169. Visits can be arranged through the office, giving parents a practical opportunity to discuss their child’s needs before applying.
