At a Glance

At the March 2023 inspection, rhymes, songs and stories shaped Woodlands' language learning, while snack routines gave children practice in independence. This is the nursery on the Ruishton Church of England School site, where play and children's interests shape the learning.

Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at its inspection on 13 and 14 March 2023. The nursery-specific findings give that judgement practical substance: adults helped children, including those with additional needs, make use of the learning space, while children managed handwashing independently before snack.

The Nursery Day

Play provides the starting point. Woodlands uses in-the-moment planning: practitioners observe what interests children and use those observations to decide how to extend their learning. The nursery also plans for individual children, arranging opportunities to revisit familiar skills and attempt new ones. For parents, this means children's interests help shape what they learn rather than simply filling time between adult activities.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and care together. Its foundations include language, physical development and learning to manage feelings and relationships. Alongside these sit early literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and creative expression. Woodlands connects its approach to the EYFS principles of individual development, relationships, the learning environment and learning itself.

In March 2023, nursery learning placed a clear emphasis on language through singing, stories and rhymes. Phonics also began in Nursery, introducing children to the sounds that support later reading. The snack bar supplied another kind of learning: children queued and washed their hands for themselves. These small routines put independence into practice alongside the communication work.

Care and Support

Each practitioner acts as key person for a group of children, spending time getting to know both children and their families. That relationship gives parents a familiar adult with whom to discuss their child's care. Communication includes personal routines such as changing nappies and wiping noses, bringing everyday care into the conversation.

Emotions are part of the learning too. Adults name children's actions to help connect words with meaning, model empathy and treat behaviour as communication. Woodlands says children's wellbeing is its first priority, recognising that feeling secure helps them engage with learning.

A nursery SENCO guides practitioners in adapting their approach for children with additional needs. In March 2023, support enabled children with SEND to participate successfully in the nursery environment. The nursery manager and deputy manager also belong to the school's safeguarding team, giving nursery families direct links to that wider structure.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Somerset County Council; the annual application window runs from September to mid-January, with the exact dates to be confirmed for the relevant year.

For the 2025/2026 admission cycle, nursery attendance conferred no priority among the oversubscription criteria. Keep the Reception application separate from the decision to choose Woodlands: familiarity with the school does not secure admission.

Practical Information

The school office provides a contact route by telephone on 01823 442832 or email at office@ruishton.oak.education. An enquiry form also accepts a name, email address and message. Address correspondence to the appropriate team so the office can direct it.
