Play and exploration give this nursery its starting point, with short sessions and the option to include lunch shaping the practical day. Our Lady and St Patrick's welcomes nursery children from age 3 within the school's Foundation Stage on Fourth Avenue, Teignmouth. The Catholic school welcomes families of all faiths and backgrounds.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 14 and 15 May 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum uses play and exploration as routes into learning. For parents, the emphasis is on children discovering and trying things, rather than a timetable built solely around formal lessons.
Language is a clear thread in the early years experience. In May 2024, adults helped children extend their vocabulary, balancing time to hear children's ideas with opportunities to develop conversation. That gives talk a purpose beyond simply answering an adult's question. Children also showed increasing independence and considerate behaviour towards one another.
Stories provide another concrete example. During the same inspection, early years children enjoyed shared reading, discussed fictional characters and connected different traditional tales. These exchanges give children opportunities to explain ideas and recognise connections between stories. Daily phonics also took place across early years, introducing the sounds used in learning to read.
Before starting, children due to join can attend up to 2 free stay and play sessions. These offer a chance to experience the nursery before regular attendance begins. A separate Monday stay and play group welcomes all preschool-aged children from 8.45am to 10am.
A nursery supervisor and nursery assistant form part of the staffing structure. Lunch can be included in either the morning or afternoon session, so families can choose whether the session includes this care routine.
For concerns about special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the first contact is the child's teacher. The school follows the Plymouth CAST SEND Pathway, using a cycle of assessment, planning, action and review. Parents participate in deciding next steps, giving families a role in shaping support. The school's accessibility adaptations include yellow handrails and marked steps for pupils with visual impairments.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the local authority's normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their child's intake. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
The early years findings in May 2024 described children developing the independence needed for their next stage of learning. That preparation concerns children's development; it does not secure admission.
Morning nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am without lunch, or to 12.45pm with lunch. Afternoon attendance ends at 3.15pm, starting at 11.45am with lunch or 12.45pm without it. Lunchtime collection and drop-off use the main reception, making the lunch choice relevant to both the child's day and family arrangements.
Funding starts in September for children aged 3 born on or before 31 August, in January for those aged 3 born on or before 31 December, and in April for those aged 3 born on or before 31 March.
