Nursery at Tetsworth Primary School

Eight nursery places per session, within Amber’s mixed-age class: Tetsworth’s youngest children begin school life alongside Reception and Year 1. This is nursery provision integrated into a primary school, with older classmates rather than a separate nursery-only group. That class arrangement is a central consideration for families choosing the setting.
Children can join from the term following their third birthday. Attendance can be full-time or part-time. At the inspection on 11 and 12 June 2024, Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Language and independence give the early years day its clearest shape. In June 2024, staff helped children develop their communication and behaviour effectively, while established routines enabled them to become more independent in their learning. For a parent, these are practical foundations: learning to communicate and take part with less adult direction.
Outdoor learning includes Forest School at a site in Tetsworth village. Trained staff lead sessions for each class across the year, connecting outdoor experiences with classroom learning. The programme makes links with personal, social and emotional development as well as science and practical design. It gives children a setting beyond the classroom in which to explore the natural world.
Amber brings the nursery into a class spanning three year groups. Families choosing it should weigh that shared class structure alongside the early years focus on language, behaviour and growing independence. Nursery lunch runs from noon until 1pm, providing a fixed midday point for children attending across lunchtime.
Support for special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) was a strength in early years in June 2024: children’s needs were addressed well. This finding is specific to early years, making it directly relevant to families considering the nursery rather than a general claim about support throughout the school.
The staffing structure includes teaching assistants and special needs coordination. Tetsworth describes its behaviour approach through Ready, Respectful, Safe, with adults modelling the conduct they expect and teachers using restorative conversations to repair relationships. The emphasis is on how adults respond to children as well as what children are asked to do.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place, and nursery attendance is not among the Reception allocation criteria. Families must make a separate application through Oxfordshire County Council’s school admissions process. Choosing nursery therefore needs to stand on the nursery experience itself.
Amber already groups nursery children with Reception and Year 1. That provides a shared class context before the next stage, but it does not change the separate admissions process or confer an allocation advantage.
Full-day and half-day attendance are both options, with nursery applications handled by the school. The nursery accepts funding entitlements of 15 hours and 30 hours, allowing families to consider the attendance pattern alongside their entitlement.
