Listening, talking and stories gave Spurcroft’s nursery its clearest character in Ofsted’s November 2022 findings. Children worked on sound recognition from Nursery, while adults built vocabulary through reading aloud. For parents choosing an early start to education, the emphasis is on the language children need to understand others and express themselves.
Spurcroft Primary School in Thatcham has nursery provision for children aged three and four. It sits within the primary school, so its inspection context is the school’s early years provision. Ofsted graded early years Good at the inspection on 8 and 9 November 2022; this was an early years judgement within the school inspection.
Communication is the strongest thread in the November 2022 early years findings. Adults demonstrate correct language and ask questions that extend children’s understanding. That makes conversation part of the learning: children hear how language works, then have opportunities to think about what words mean.
Sound recognition begins in Nursery. The focus gives children practice in distinguishing sounds, an early foundation for learning to read. It is a useful distinction for parents: this finding concerns the beginnings of reading, rather than a claim that nursery children are already reading books independently.
Stories serve another purpose alongside listening. Adults read aloud routinely to broaden vocabulary, giving children access to words through books as well as conversation. Together, questioning, sound recognition and stories describe an approach that puts spoken language first. The practical value is that early learning develops understanding as well as familiarity with sounds.
In November 2022, support for children’s communication involved the whole early years staff team. Language development therefore extended beyond one adult’s contribution. For a child beginning nursery, consistent examples of accurate speech give everyday exchanges a learning purpose.
Safety also has a practical learning element. Younger children were taught to consider risks through examples such as using sparklers. This connects safety to a recognisable activity, helping children think about what requires care.
At school level, staff training covered recognising potential harm, with concerns passed on promptly and leaders acting to obtain help for children and families. These safeguarding arrangements concern the school as a whole, including the setting in which the nursery operates.
Attending Spurcroft’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a distinct decision, even if your child already attends Nursery.
The nursery’s work on recognising sounds supports preparation for later reading. That educational preparation is separate from the allocation of a school place.
