Stories, rhymes and clear daily routines give Zouch Academy’s nursery its character. This is the school’s own provision in Tidworth, taking children from three years of age. Learning starts here with the foundations for what follows, rather than waiting until children move into the next classroom.
Ofsted judged the early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 4 and 5 June 2024. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The nursery-specific findings give it substance: adults expected much of the children, who responded very positively and understood the routines. For parents, that combines an early start to learning with a day children can learn to understand.
Language is a substantial part of the early learning experience. In June 2024, children enjoyed being read to and taking part in rhymes, while conversations with adults helped their communication develop. These are practical foundations: listening to a story, joining a rhyme and talking with an adult give children different ways to engage with language.
Reading begins early. Children start phonics on joining the school, connecting the enjoyment of stories with learning to read. Adult interaction matters alongside that teaching. The early years findings highlighted exchanges that developed children’s language, so the learning experience includes conversation as well as listening.
The curriculum starts in Nursery, with ambitious learning that establishes foundations for later education. Clear routines also shape the experience. Children understood what was expected during the day and followed those expectations readily in June 2024. That gives the session a recognisable structure alongside the learning, helping children participate in the shared activities and expectations of a school setting.
Daily expectations include how children treat other people. From Nursery onwards, children listened respectfully to adults and to each other in June 2024. Alongside their grasp of routines, this points to learning how to take part in a group, giving another person attention as well as contributing themselves.
Adults’ high expectations were matched by a very positive response from nursery children. For a parent considering this first stage of school life, the useful detail is the connection between expectations and children’s behaviour: the routines were understood and followed. Safeguarding arrangements across the school were effective at the June 2024 inspection.
Attending Zouch Academy’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions; attendance should not be treated as securing the next place.
