Individual programmes, smaller teaching groups and therapy support shape the setting around Pictor Academy’s nursery. This is provision within a special school in Timperley, where children’s communication, physical development and learning needs determine the activities planned for them. The school caters for children aged 2 to 11; that is its whole-school age range, rather than a nursery-only range.
Pictor belongs to the Sovereign Trust and occupies a purpose-built school building. Its pupils have special educational needs, including autism, language disorders, physical difficulties and developmental delay. For families, the distinctive feature is the combination of education and specialist support within the same school setting.
Learning at Pictor starts with an individual programme. Activities are selected around each pupil’s needs, rather than assuming that children will engage, communicate or develop skills in the same way. That makes the child’s own starting point central to the learning planned for them.
The school’s Informal Curriculum gives a concrete picture of its approach to early developmental learning. It includes sensory exploration through music, art and food, alongside stories experienced through the senses and early problem-solving. These are school curriculum approaches, rather than a fixed nursery timetable. They show how learning can begin with responding, exploring and communicating before more conventional subject work.
Physical and sensory experiences also feature in the curriculum framework: swimming, sensory circuits and Rebound sit alongside technology activities. Named spaces include Rumpus, Physio and a Sensory room, as well as space for individual work. The framework also includes outdoor learning. Together, these details show that learning is organised around movement, sensory experience and interaction as well as classroom activities.
Specialist support is part of Pictor’s school structure. Alongside education staff, the team includes occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and the School Nursing Service. Smaller class groups provide the organisational setting for that support, while individual programmes connect activities to each pupil’s needs.
Families contribute to annual reviews alongside professionals and the child. Progress records draw on written observations, photographs and video, giving different ways to capture learning that may be difficult to show through a conventional task. Termly Learning Journeys bring those observations together. For a parent, this places everyday responses and developing skills within the discussion about progress.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery and Reception admission are separate processes: families must apply again through the applicable Reception route by its deadline. Treat the nursery decision and the next school placement as separate decisions, even when considering continued education at Pictor.
