Play sets the pace at Great Bridge’s nursery: children begin together, spend time learning with a key adult, then choose activities indoors or outside. Stories, snacks and nursery rhymes bring the session to a close. This is the school’s own nursery on Mount Street in Tipton, with morning and afternoon sessions rather than a single published nursery day.
Language gives the provision its particular character. The early years curriculum puts communication first, alongside early reading and maths. For a young child, that means learning to express an idea and join a conversation forms part of learning itself.
A group welcome opens the session before children move into practical activities in smaller groups. Their key adult supports this work; afterwards, children decide what to explore. Adults remain involved through conversation and support, so choosing an activity does not mean being left to work everything out alone.
Indoor and outdoor learning areas operate together, with children able to move between them during the free-flow part of the session. That gives them a choice of setting for their play. Later, everyone gathers for a story and snack, with singing before home time providing a recognisable ending.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) approach here combines activities directed by adults with exploration chosen by children. Skills are planned in sequence, while the content can adapt to children’s interests. Communication and Language receives particular emphasis, with early number and reading skills developed alongside it.
Voice 21 provides the school’s framework for speaking and listening. Conversation during snacks and role play give younger children opportunities to practise language in everyday situations. Early years story sessions also include role play, while Wonderful Word Walls collect vocabulary from books for children to encounter again.
In May 2024, Ofsted found that early years children sustained their attention, worked increasingly independently and understood familiar routines. Adults’ questioning helped extend vocabulary. Those findings give substance to the emphasis on talk and practical exploration.
Small-group work with a key adult creates a regular point of contact within the nursery session. Across early years, staff observe children, get to know them and provide additional help when they identify gaps in learning. The approach connects support to what a child actually needs to practise.
Snack time is part of the nursery routine. Children under five can also receive milk through Cool Milk registration; registering before the Tuesday deadline of 5pm starts provision the following week.
For communication with home, the school uses Class Dojo to share classroom photographs, messages and updates. Its direct messaging facility lets parents contact teachers, helping conversations continue beyond collection time.
Attending Great Bridge’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
Morning Nursery runs from 8.30am until 11.30am; Afternoon Nursery runs from 12.20pm until 3.20pm. These distinct sessions give families two different timings to consider alongside work and collection arrangements.
Nursery enquiries go through the school office on 0121 557 1526, and families can also speak to office staff in person. An online enquiry form provides another contact route.
