Learning to put thoughts into words gives Sacred Heart’s early years its clearest character. In March 2022, adults helped children develop the vocabulary to communicate clearly, and children in the early years were comfortable and settled. That matters for a child beginning to explain what they need and join conversations.
The nursery belongs to Sacred Heart Primary School on Sedgley Road East in Tipton. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 30 and 31 March 2022; this judgement covers the school’s early years provision.
Communication provides a concrete picture of early learning here. In March 2022, adults demonstrated language and introduced words children could use to express their ideas. The practical emphasis was on helping children make themselves understood, giving them a foundation for talking with adults and other children.
Across the school, staff training includes early communication techniques such as Intensive Interaction and Makaton. These are relevant approaches for families discussing a child’s communication needs, rather than a promise that every nursery child receives the same intervention.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), support involves the class teacher and SENDCo working with parents. Adding a child to the SEND register is discussed with the family first, followed by a letter explaining the reasons and proposed help. A Pupil Passport brings together the child’s needs, strengths and useful support strategies, with updates shared during teacher meetings. This gives parents specific arrangements to discuss.
Assessment combines staff observations with parents’ knowledge of their child. Where appropriate, the Sandwell Inclusion Support Team contributes specialist assessment. Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists also work with the school, providing advice and strategies for individual needs.
Adapting learning. In March 2022, some adults lacked the knowledge or techniques to adjust teaching adequately for children with SEND, including in Nursery. Families should consider how the planned support matches their child’s particular needs. This concern sits alongside the finding that early years children were settled; the two address different aspects of provision.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. School admissions are managed by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, so the council is the application route.
Preparation for a new class is a separate matter. Children spend time with their next teacher in their next classroom in July. For children with SEND, additional preparation may include classroom afternoons, pictures to use at home or a social story. These arrangements help children become familiar with a change; they do not secure admission.
The school is on Sedgley Road East, Tipton, DY4 8UH, and its telephone number is 0121 557 1511.
For SEND advice, families can also contact office@sacredheartpri.com. SEND coffee mornings provide opportunities to talk with other parents and external services, giving families another way to discuss support.
