A market town in continuous use since a Norman castle rose on the River Exe in the early twelfth century, Tiverton stands as the commercial and administrative centre of Mid Devon. Around 22,000 people live within the town today.

Uplowman, to the east, is among the most school-competitive pockets for families seeking rural primary catchments, while Tiverton itself concentrates the majority of the district's secondary provision. Witheridge and Bolham extend the choice of village settings further out. Tiverton Parkway station, a few miles south on the Great Western Main Line, puts Exeter St Davids within roughly fifteen minutes.
