Nursery at Blackwater Community Primary School

Plants, palms and classroom greenery give Wheal Friendly a distinctive character. Blackwater Community Primary School’s nursery sits within this Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision, led by a class teacher whose responsibilities include nursery and Reception children. For families, this places nursery learning within an existing early years team at the school in Blackwater.
Language gives the learning its clearest thread. In July 2023, children in the early years approached learning confidently and were curious about their surroundings. Staff concentrated on developing language through planned activities, including singing nursery rhymes to practise listening. That gives a familiar childhood activity a specific learning purpose: listening closely as well as joining in.
Wheal Friendly also allows flexibility in its routine. Children initiate their break, rather than following the school’s fixed break timings strictly. This gives the youngest children a different rhythm from the older classes. Inside, plants and palms bring natural elements into the classroom. Together, these details suggest a day shaped around early childhood, with language practice and room for children to influence the timing of a pause.
Additional needs are addressed through the school’s SENCO, class teachers and support staff. Initial help takes place in class; where more support is needed, individual targets and strategies are discussed with parents. Small-group work or individual interventions can follow. The practical benefit is a sequence of support that starts with the child’s everyday learning and becomes more specific when necessary.
Communication has several routes. A Home-School link book can be provided, giving families another way to share concerns alongside conversations with teachers. The school also has a Rainbow Room for children needing additional emotional support, led by a member of the team trained as a Thrive practitioner.
Physical access includes ramps and a designated parking space for disabled badge holders. Children with medical needs have a Care Plan, reviewed regularly, while toileting needs are addressed through an Intimate Care Plan. These are useful arrangements for families whose child needs support beyond learning activities.
At school level, lunch can be brought from home or ordered beforehand from the kitchen. This provides a choice between a packed lunch and a school meal.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Cornwall Council’s normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. The council handles applications; the school cannot admit pupils directly. Treat that application as a separate task from choosing nursery provision.
For children with SEND, transition support can include extra classroom visits, meeting new adults and Social Stories when needed. Teachers, the SENCO and parents discuss individual needs before class changes. This helps prepare the child for change; it is separate from the allocation of a school place.
