Counting at snack time, stories brought to life with gestures, and Forest School give Beechwood’s youngest children several ways into learning. The nursery and pre-school cater for ages 2 to 4 at the school’s Pembury Road site in Royal Tunbridge Wells. They form part of an independent school, with early years sitting within its pre-prep provision.
At the ISI inspection of 23 to 25 September 2025, the Nursery class had 25 children. That is a dated class headcount, rather than a measure of places available now. The school’s 23 acres of parkland include outdoor classrooms and Forest School, giving outdoor learning a concrete setting.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning here connects language, number, movement and social development with practical experiences. In September 2025, children explored comparisons of size and quantity through play, using objects to make counting meaningful. Snack time also became a chance to practise sharing vocabulary. Numbers have an everyday purpose.
Sensory experiences give children something to talk about: staff build vocabulary around sights, sounds, smells and textures. Songs and games develop listening, while expressive storytelling encourages children to predict events and discuss characters. Activities match children’s interests and developmental stages, helping them keep going with a task.
Movement has its own place. Children practise balance and ball control, alongside running, jumping and climbing. Forest School and outdoor learning sit alongside music, drama, dance, PE, languages and early reading activities in the nursery provision. For parents, the combination means the day includes physical and creative experiences as well as early language and number work.
Emotional learning runs through ordinary interactions. In September 2025, children were learning words for their feelings, responding kindly when another child was upset and understanding when to apologise. Taking turns, sharing equipment and putting resources away also formed part of daily routines. These are practical steps towards managing a group setting.
The pre-school team includes a manager and deputy manager with CACHE Level 3 qualifications, alongside early years assistants. Its staffing also includes a Level 3 Forest School leader and an early years SENCo, giving families an identifiable role for special educational needs support.
In September 2025, early years staff had paediatric first aid training, and children received continuous support from suitably trained adults. Risk assessments addressed both supervision and intimate care. These details matter for children who still need close help with personal routines.
Food charges cover meals, snacks and drinks consumed at nursery. The later after-school care session includes a light supper, so food provision extends into that part of the evening.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask the admissions team to confirm Reception application requirements and any deadline. Familiarity with Beechwood should not be treated as an offer of a school place.
Preparation also happens through everyday learning. In September 2025, early years children were developing listening, emotional vocabulary and turn-taking alongside counting and physical coordination. Those skills help children take part in their next stage of education; they are separate from the admissions decision.
