At a Glance

Coins in pretend shops, stories that invite predictions, and play that teaches children to share: these are concrete examples of early learning at The Mead School. Its nursery provision is called Pre-Reception and serves children aged three to four within an independent school in Tunbridge Wells. In January 2026, it comprised one Pre-Reception class.

The ISI inspection of 6 to 8 January 2026 found that early years learning was planned and delivered effectively, supporting development in language, early reading, mathematics and relationships. These findings cover the early years together, rather than providing a separate nursery grade. For parents, the useful picture is of practical learning supported by observation of each child's development.

The Nursery Day

The early years foundation stage (EYFS) brings together learning and development across several areas. Here, its foundations include communicating ideas, recognising numbers, developing relationships and understanding feelings. Activities connect these skills to things children can do and discuss.

Pretend shopping gives counting a purpose. Children handle coins in role play and explore simple exchanges, linking number recognition with an everyday situation. Stories, songs and rhymes provide another route into learning: adults ask questions that encourage children to anticipate what happens next and explain their thinking. This gives children opportunities to practise expressing ideas rather than simply listening.

Indoor and outdoor activities support both small hand movements and larger physical movements. Alongside this, play involves sharing materials, waiting for a turn and working together. Stories and conversations explore fairness and kindness, while tidying resources gives children a practical way to consider other people.

Staff combine observation with assessment and termly tracking to establish what children understand and where further help is needed. That connects the activities to individual development, rather than treating participation alone as evidence of learning.

Care and Support

Predictable routines and secure relationships support calm early years learning. Adults help children name feelings and understand boundaries, giving them a shared language for managing emotions and playing alongside others. In January 2026, the youngest children settled quickly and were developing independence.

Care and learning overlap here. Taking turns, considering others' safety and putting resources away help children practise responsibility in manageable steps. Physical activities indoors and outside also support the development of movement skills alongside emotional regulation and co-operation.

The January 2026 inspection recommended that staff allow pupils enough time to show their understanding and participate fully, following uneven opportunities in some lessons across the school. This was a school-wide improvement point; it should not be read as a finding specifically about Pre-Reception.

Moving On to Reception

Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask the school about its Reception application process and any deadline. Choosing Pre-Reception should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself, rather than an assumption that the next place is secured.
