Role play, Forest School exploration and daily music give St Joseph's nursery its character. This is the nursery within St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Uttoxeter, where learning connects children's family experiences with the wider world. Catholic faith has a daily presence through prayer and learning about creation.
Ofsted judged early years provision Outstanding at the inspection held on 25 and 26 June 2024 and 17 July 2024. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The autumn theme, What Makes Me Special?, starts with familiar territory: children's families, cultures and experiences. Children get to know their peers and classroom routines, then use the role play area to explore situations they recognise. Personal development and imaginative play sit together here.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) takes practical form through language, movement, early mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. Stories and rhymes introduce vocabulary, while different tools and materials give children opportunities to make marks. Counting happens through play; number rhymes, blocks and puzzles bring early mathematical ideas into activities children can handle and explore.
Squiggle while you Wiggle supports physical development, alongside exploring different ways of moving. Music and movement happen daily. Outdoors, children investigate the natural world in both the outdoor area and the Forest School area, giving their learning a setting beyond the classroom.
In June and July 2024, nursery children participated enthusiastically in songs, rhymes and storytelling, building foundations for learning to read. They also persisted when activities became difficult. Behaviour routines were established from the beginning of early years, giving children clear expectations as they learned to work alongside others.
Getting familiar with other children and classroom routines is part of the autumn learning programme. Its focus on similarities, differences and family life gives children familiar subjects to share as relationships develop.
School lunches are cooked on the premises. Children eat in the hall with their class teacher and receive help carrying their trays. Families should discuss food allergies with the office, so dietary concerns can be raised directly with the school.
For children on the special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) register, the school uses an assess, plan, do and review process. A Pupil Passport records support targets, with updates and parent meetings every half term. Support can involve individual work or small groups, including speech and language activities. Parents begin by speaking to the class teacher, with the SENDCO providing the next point of contact. This gives families a clear route into discussion and regular opportunities to review support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as separate steps.
The school is on Springfield Road, Uttoxeter. For drop-off and collection, families are directed to the free car park on Fairfield Road; Springfield Road is reserved for children coming or going during school hours.
