Three-hour mornings in the Infant class give Leck St Peter’s nursery its defining shape. Qualified teachers and a teaching assistant run the provision, placing nursery children within the school’s infant setting. Education here starts from age 3.
The surroundings have a character of their own: green fields, sheep and dry stone walls, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This is a school nursery in a rural setting. The school’s Christian values include kindness, patience and gentleness, and it aims to help children develop independence and confidence.
Sessions run from 9.00am to noon every morning. That makes the nursery a morning commitment for families, with the Infant class as its base rather than a separate nursery setting.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning, development and care into the same framework for children under 5. Communication is a clear focus here. In June 2026, adults added new vocabulary during children’s play, helping them expand the words they could use. Conversation is part of the learning.
Across the early years, children listened to familiar stories, learned the sounds used in reading and practised with books suited to their level. Staff checked children’s existing skills and understanding, generally using those checks to shape subsequent activities. These are early-years findings across the school, rather than a separate assessment of nursery alone.
Curriculum precision. Ofsted’s June 2026 inspection judged early years to meet the Expected standard, but some parts of the curriculum needed clearer teaching priorities. Staff did not always know exactly which knowledge to highlight during interactions, leaving some children with gaps in learning. For parents, the useful distinction is between purposeful talk during play and how consistently that talk teaches the intended knowledge.
By June 2026, children in the early years were content and settled. Staff maintained close contact with families and adjusted activities for children with additional needs, enabling them to participate alongside their peers. Extra help also supported children who needed to catch up.
A school special educational needs coordinator provides a point of contact for SEND support. The school also participates in Operation Encompass: Lancashire Police share information about domestic abuse incidents where a child was present, witnessed events or was involved. That gives staff information relevant to supporting the child afterwards.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the normal deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions.
Being based in the Infant class is part of the nursery’s everyday organisation. It should not be mistaken for an admissions advantage.
To apply for nursery, contact the school and return the nursery application form. General enquiries go to bursar@leck-st-peters.lancs.sch.uk or 015242 71538. Visits can be arranged by appointment through the office, giving families an opportunity to see the setting before choosing it.
