Nursery at St Minver School

Exploration and growing independence shape Cowrie Class, St Minver School’s nursery provision for children from two years old. It sits within the primary school on Rock Road in St Minver. The school aims to help children try unfamiliar things, persevere and learn alongside others, giving these early experiences a purpose beyond preparation for lessons.
Adult guidance and opportunities for children to explore independently work together here. Teaching takes place with individual children, smaller groups and the class together. That gives the day different scales: time for focused attention alongside opportunities to learn with other children. The school encourages children to test ideas and tackle challenges rather than simply follow instructions.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers seven learning areas. For parents, that means attention to movement, conversation and emotional development alongside early number work and literacy. Creative expression and discovering how the world works complete the picture. Playing, taking an active part and thinking through problems are central to the approach, so learning involves how children investigate as well as what they learn.
Stories and rhymes helped lay foundations for children’s later learning. During the December 2022 inspection, staff assessment informed both support for independence and changes to the indoor and outdoor spaces; early years provision was judged effective. These findings give substance to the emphasis on exploration: adults adapted the environment around children’s development rather than treating the surroundings as a fixed backdrop.
A nursery manager works with nursery assistants, with paediatric first aid attached to both roles. This gives the team a defined management structure alongside practical preparation for responding to young children’s medical emergencies.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school has a SEND coordinator and aims for each child to participate fully in learning. Its support links include SENDIASS Cornwall and Parent Carers Cornwall, giving families named routes to advice and a parent carer network.
Operation Encompass connects the school with Devon and Cornwall Police. When police have been called to a domestic incident that a child has been exposed to or involved in, information reaches the school before the next school day, allowing a trained Key Adult to use it confidentially when arranging support for affected children and families.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a distinct decision and task, even when your child already attends Cowrie Class.
Morning sessions run from 8.40am to 11.45am, with an optional 30-minute lunch extension and collection at 12.15pm. Afternoon sessions start at 12.15pm and finish at 3.15pm. Both patterns run five days a week; the all-day option covers five full days, from 8.40am to 3.15pm. The lunch extension changes the morning collection time, which matters when planning the family’s day.
