Reading and learning familiar routines give this nursery its character. Wadebridge Primary Academy’s nursery welcomes children aged two, three and four, placing their early learning within a primary school on Gonvena Hill in Wadebridge.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 18 and 19 April 2023. That judgement covers the early years phase within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. Nursery-specific findings included children’s enjoyment of reading and their introduction to school routines, useful foundations for families seeking an early start in a school setting.
Play and practical activities carry the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. In parent language, this means developing movement, conversation and relationships alongside early number work, literacy, creativity and learning about the world. Children’s interests help shape the topics: adults collect their ideas using mind maps, then plan activities around their interests and developmental needs. Children therefore have a part in shaping what they explore.
Reading begins in Nursery. In April 2023, children developed enthusiasm for books from the outset, while learning in the early years caught their interest. Adults balanced help with opportunities for children to attempt learning independently. The implication is a day in which support and growing independence sit alongside one another.
A July 2026 sponsored walk gives a concrete example of nursery participation outdoors. Early years children wore sea-creature costumes and walked around the school field to raise funds for the RNLI and their phase. It brought movement, imaginative dressing-up and a shared purpose together in one activity.
Relationships were a strength of the early years in April 2023. Adults understood children’s needs and adjusted the help they gave, supporting children’s confidence and sense of security. Learning the school’s routines began as children joined Nursery, giving them familiar expectations to follow.
For additional learning needs, the school’s SENDCo works alongside teachers and teaching assistants. Support can involve smaller groups, extra help in class and specialist resources, with Speech and Language Therapy and Educational Psychology among the outside services involved. Parents can raise learning concerns with their child’s teacher first, then contact the SENDCo through the office.
SEND targets. In April 2023, some pupils across the school had learning targets that were too imprecise to measure progress clearly. Families discussing support should focus on specific goals and how progress towards them will be checked; this was a school-wide concern, rather than a finding restricted to Nursery.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Cornwall Council School Admissions. The application window runs from September to January, so choosing Nursery and applying for school need separate attention.
Transition activities support the practical move. By early July 2026, nursery children moving into Reception had taken part in transition events. These help prepare children for the next stage, but do not establish an admissions advantage.
