Nursery at Egremont Primary School

Shopping lists, cards for loved ones and a topic called Our Neighbourhood give Egremont’s early learning a recognisable starting point: children’s everyday lives. Play provides opportunities to make marks, talk and choose activities, alongside learning guided by adults.
The nursery belongs to Egremont Primary School’s early years provision on Church Street in Wallasey. Provision includes children aged two; older children can apply for Foundation Stage 1 in the term following their third birthday. In March 2026, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to meet the Expected standard. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines language, movement and social development with early literacy, maths, creative work and exploration of the world. Children make some choices themselves and also join activities directed by adults. Learning takes place indoors and outside, giving play a place alongside focused teaching.
Writing starts with practical purposes. Children create shopping lists and cards, practise their names and develop the small hand movements needed to control drawing and writing tools. For Autumn 1 in 2026, Our Neighbourhood provides the early years topic. These are concrete starting points for talking about familiar experiences.
Read Write Inc provides the phonics approach, with activities involving different senses across the phase. The EYFS daily pattern includes English and maths activities, a snack break, lunch with outdoor play, phonics and afternoon topic work. A story closes the day. This is the phase’s timetable, so it should be distinguished from an individual nursery booking.
In March 2026, adults developed children’s vocabulary through play, stories, rhymes and songs. Teaching consistency. Some conversations and activities did not extend children’s understanding sufficiently, especially for disadvantaged children. Making fuller use of these exchanges was an early years improvement priority, a relevant consideration for families seeking support with language development.
Relationships with families help the youngest children settle. In March 2026, close cooperation with parents supported two-year-olds as they adjusted to school, while adults recognised additional needs promptly and responded quickly. The emphasis is on identifying help early rather than waiting for difficulties to grow.
Food also has a social role. Hutchinson Catering prepares school meals on site, with lunch served in the downstairs hall. Children having packed lunches sit with those eating hot meals, creating a shared mealtime. The office handles requests for hot lunches.
Parents can follow early years learning and announcements through @EgremontEYFS. Children should bring a water bottle bearing their name, and clothing should be labelled so misplaced belongings can be returned.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions process. The route is Wirral’s primary school application, including an online option, with a deadline in the middle of January.
A summer welcome afternoon before children begin school brings families together with Foundation Stage staff. This supports familiarity with the team; it should be kept separate from the decision about a Reception place.
School opening hours are 08:45 to 15:15, Monday to Friday during term time, with closure on public bank holidays. The school follows Wirral Local Authority term dates. These school hours provide context for planning family routines, rather than establishing a nursery session package.
